55g "Wet Pet" Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I’m going to be hated for saying this but you could pull off an Oscar. Usually they wouldn’t mess with a blue phantom unless they think they can eat it. How big is it? You would need to keep your water impeccable because there would be so much waste that in a 55, nitrites would build us quickly

Having second thoughts on that. Really 55 is the bare min for just one Oscar no tank mates. It could work but there’s a good chance you would have to return it

I'm very surprised to see that you made the recommendation to begin with. I wouldn't do an Oscar in this tank, so it probably doesn't matter, anyway, but I'm surprised that it seems the recommendation is to stay away from things like Green Terror and Salvini, which to my knowledge are far smaller than Oscars, which is why I'm surprised. Anyway, if it still matters, the Phantom Pleco is about halfway to full size idI say.

Oscar, and red texas, are really not great suggestions for a 55 in my opinion. They will just get too large. And the Red Texas (actually a flowerhorn type) are known to be highly aggressive, could definitely kill the pleco.

The cichlids I mentioned could probably work with the pleco and barbs. None of them get all that large. They all can be quite aggressive, so there would be risk. But hopefully they don't see the pleco or barbs as a threat.
Here is a video of my male panamensis in his 45 gallon planted, where he is the only cichlid, but lives with smaller peaceful fish. It should be noted he has taken out some of the slower residents of this tank, since introducing him. Barbs and pleco would probably be better than the fish I have with him.

You could do a single salvini, and dither fish (as long as you don't mind that the salvini may kill the dither fish). I can't guarantee the salvini will place nice with the phantom pleco.

The male green terror would eventually out grow the tank in 3-4 years once it hits close to 10" total length.

I wouldn't do both salvini and green terror.

Thanks for the replies! What's most likely, if anything to work as dither fish for a Salvini? I understand that nothing is guaranteed, but I'd prefer to go with the best odds if I do go in this direction. Also, when we talk about Barbs being an option, are we strictly talking about Tigers, or are there several that could work?

You’re right. Bad advice on my part

I'd absolutely love to add Rainbows in as I love them! But, at $10-$15 per fish, depending on the type of Rainbow, this seems like a very expensive experiment. I get that nothing is a guarantee, but I think I'd like to have a good idea that it's likely to work before I go for it. I like many of the Barbs, including the Roselines, too, so it seems like I have several options that MAY work. Also, I see there are Harlequins in the video posted above. I have these in the tank already, but I'm sure these are not pissibpo with the more aggressive fish that I'm most leaning toward.

I know some of these fish are smaller than you’d like but you could do Kribs, Shellie’s, a red shoulder severum, Angles...

Some of my suggestions would require good filtration and an excellent water change schedule on your part..

In regards to some of the fish you want...a gt for example, if you got a female I think you would be fine in a 55g...same with some of the other fish if you stuck with females you should be fine as females stay smaller than males
