55g "Wet Pet" Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know some of these fish are smaller than you’d like but you could do Kribs, Shellie’s, a red shoulder severum, Angles...

Some of my suggestions would require good filtration and an excellent water change schedule on your part..

In regards to some of the fish you want...a gt for example, if you got a female I think you would be fine in a 55g...same with some of the other fish if you stuck with females you should be fine as females stay smaller than males
Thanks for weighing in! Yes, most of those are snallsm than I want, and the 55 us currently an Angelfish community, but I'm having bad luck with the Angels, so I'm considering a change.

I'm definitely leaning towards a female GT at this point, and I can definitely get my hands on one. But, I'm wondering if i can also have the following with it. My Phantom Pleco, a Bichir (one of the smaller ones), and some dithers.

I would think the pleco would be fine with some dithers, but would omit the Bichir

Why would you omit thr bichir? Is it a room thing, or aggression, or what? Do you think Rainbows would be a good dither fish, or is this too risky given the price of them?

I’m not familiar with with rainbows to give advise but in regards to the Bichir yes I would think it would be cramped with a pleco, GT, and dithers....that’s just my opinion....I like to understock and not cram as many fish as I can into a fish thank....

My main fish tank is a 90g with two JDs, two HRPs, couple of mollies, couple of myster snails and 4 bleeding heart tetras....my last water change was on Sunday and the nitrates were reading 20ppm that was what built up in a week and a half (my water changes are always 80-90%) from my readings I could add more fish and up my water change schedule but I’d rather not....that’s just me though....ultimately you can stick what you’d like in your tank and no one can stop you....it’s fantastic your asking before you actually stock!

I hear you! And, I definitely don't want to need to do a ton of water changes. Normal ones, of course, but not an insane amount of water changes. I definitely want a stocking plan that makes sense and will work out in the long haul.

If you choose a GT you might go though a couple until you find the right fit and gender you are looking for, juiciest are difficult to sex at a young age, also I would suggest watching them in the store and don’t choose the dominant one, choose a mellow one that stays out of the “drama” but one that also looks healthy.

Sounds good. I know of a guy who's selling a female GT, so I'm considering that one, which means I won't have a chance to choose one of several fish. But, I do believe he's got a good idea of this one's personality, so I'll talk to him about that.

I'm hoping to hear back from a few others in regard to the bichir, and Rainbows, though. I always like to hear several options before making a decision on fish, especially when it's fish that could go several different ways.

The female GT advice is fine, a female would work
The rainbows and pleco should be no problem with a GT. You could also get an albino Senegal bichir- the albinos stay under about 9" max, they are the smallest bichir. I have found bichirs to be good tankmates for cichlids.
So the 55 with a female GT, blue phantom pleco, albino Senegal, and some rainbows. That is do-able, but will be stocked on the heavier side. Once per week large water changes will be required.
