55gal Stand and tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
OK, i will try to do that later. A quick, an important filtration question: I was leafing through a cataloug and noticed that whisper carbon biobags are under $1 each. Would it be possible to use them instead of Fluval ones so i could save money, i would take out the plastic piece, (it just slides out the top) then just sew the hole shut. Thanks Also, what size? I was thinking large?

I wouldnt recommend it.

What you could do is go to a LFS that sells carbon sheets that look like foam and just cut to size. I just bought some that will last me about 3 months for my sump for less than $4

The "Whisper" carbon and anything else whisper is not very good quality stuff, and when you buy the fluval one you are paying for quality and brand name of course.

WOW long Thread!!
Great tank! Give your parents a big hug, most kids don't know what a tape measure is and just play video games all day!!
Good choice on the filter but don't bother with the carbon. Use the space for more Bio. Spend some time reading in the setup and filtration forum.

So i got the 204 today and of course, it had a leak in it, just a small little drip, it was in the bottom in one of the foot things, just a small little crack. Without thinking, i repaired it with GE Silicon II on the outside of the filter casing. Will this be safe? I have heard that the GE II is not good for the aquarium but since i used such a small amount will i be safe????

Most silicons dont contain anything harmful to the aquarium, you should be fine.
Did you buy the filter new or used?

I bought it used, it was missing a ton of stuff, thought i was getting a good deal. LOL, it was missing a piece of tubing, i used a piece of garden hose, the intake pipe is bent? missing intake strainer, some of the mounting brackets.......... Anyway, the silicon said mildew resistant and i heard that this was really bad. The silicon is only on the outside of the filter and it was only a very small crack, couldn't even see through it, like a hairline crack, i just dont want the stupid thing killing all of my fish cause of some poison in the silicon.

I think you will be fine. For the intake strainer just use a piece of car wash sponge or something like that at the end of tube.
