55gal wet pet

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I had my grammodes in a 100 gallon tank alone, I never saw him. I think they need some dither fish, but since they are a bit agressive, tend to kill smaller fish. There was a really nice reef store when I was in Boone, about 20 years ago. Not sure if it is still there. But they had freshwater fish as well. Might be worth checking out, assuming the store is still there.

Thanks for all of the great feedback and opinions. I really don't want to rush into anything, so i'm going to do a bit more research and look at the finances to see if upgrading to a larger tank within a year is really possible.
It's cool to find a community online where I might be able to contribute some of my experiences with aquariums while i continue to learn. Thanks!

Well, I finally made my decision and scored what i feel is a great deal. After much searching around, I picked up a 5" Red Dragon Flowerhorn. I understand that I may need to increase my tank size for him in the next year, but he was in what appeared to be a 20gal long tank at the store with about 10 Blood Parrots and after seeing his personality I decided that I could offer him a much better home. The picture doesn't do him justice since it was taken with the cell phone right after he was put in the tank. He's got a lot more color now.
I guess now I just need to get my act together and start building my 360gal wooden dream tank!

Nice.....Now just save up $75 and pick up a 75 gallon tank off of craigslist and transfer filters, etc... to the new 75.

You'll have about a year or so to do that. Plenty of time.

In all honesty, and as you can tell from where I originally placed the FH on my list (last), I wasn't a huge fan either. However, after seeing the personality that this fish had in the store (okay maybe he was just pissed off at the BPs and hungry) and after getting him home, I am super excited about the decision to give him a chance. His current kok shape suggest that he isn't going to have one of the huge obnoxious fatty tumors on his head that a lot of FH owners look for, and I'm fine with that. I am still undecided on the whole hybridization topic (don't mean to open a can of worms here), but I look at it this way; it wasn't the fish's fault someone decided to unnatrually create it, so I'm going to do what I can to ensure he has a good life and is fat and happy.
In my opinion the only fish that has had close to this much personality was the beast of an Oscar I had many, many years ago. He got to be 14.25" long (back when I had room to spare for a 120gal, and was single). I guess I've been looking for that sort of personality and interaction ever since.

The inbreeding that took part in the creation of these fish has unfortunately shortened there lifespan to about 6 years give or take a few years. They also grow extremely fast in comparison to any of the cichlids mentioned. IMO it would be best to start looking for a 75 gallon now. Good luck with your new fish!
