I also have a tank with large oscars and cichla jds bichirs red devels and they are fine with pfs no sand in filters and they move it around. It stays on the bottom

Tile idea is interesting... Does anyone have any pictures of this? How does it look? Does it offer a natural look or no?? Also how do people feel about backdrops for their tanks?

My old 180gal with tile. Easy to clean. As for the back drop, I like black. For my 350gal, I will be doing tile for the back.

Is there a certain tile you can or cannot use? That to me stands out like a sore thumb, black may be a little more subtle but I'm not sure?

I personally liked the look of my old 180gal tank. But that's just me and I can care less what people think.....

Moving on...

As for a tile that you can and can't use....., i think slate would be the worst. Just for the fact that it might raise your ph. That's about it. Ceramic and marble can be pretty costly for large tanks.....I guess.

I agree. Tank is all about what you like and as long you like it that's all that counts

Tile is cool. I just like sand overall. This is almost small rock to large sand whatever you want to call it. Carib sea torpedo beach. Amazon had a cheap place to order it from. Pm me if you want me to look it up for you. uploadfromtaptalk1346098971930.jpguploadfromtaptalk1346099068311.jpg

Make sure that the substrate you use is not too fine. River pebbles from 1/2-1" are ideal. My old 715 did really well with these. I mixed in smaller 1/4" pebbles to fill in as well. Tiles get pockets of eutropichic bacteria beneath them which could cause major problems! Do not use lime based stone that affects pH
