most zoos are full of complete and under tools. They are run by people who think they are better then the PRIVATE sector because the goverment helps pay there bills. The majority of zoos are incapable of keeping what they do. If you are in any way a long term reptile keeper and have done your research on other species of monitors, crocodilians and snakes you will find 90% of the time it is a private individual who was the first to breed and produce any or most reptiles or even animals (fish, birds mammals)
what I am saying more or less is giving your babies to the zoos will just make it harder for more people like you to work with this species. See if you think you can work with this species then there are 1000 others who do to and if you should be given the chance then so should they. I know it all sounds hippocritical.

i for one would like to hear some back ground from what you keep and have kept that gives you the thought of keeping salvadorii which is much more dangerous to me then a komodo.

here are a few pics of mine when it was around.

Background monitors I have personally had and kept (Black throat monitor x4, had a pair of argus back in 07, had a few rescued bosc's, and a tegu)
I have actually been around komodo's in the wild, Well at the feeding pit they had in this tourist attraction in this little village. As my uncle is a pilot for john wayne airport and a few others, but mostly works out of there.
And I have always been around monitors since little.
To be quite honest, there was only a few times I have actually been around and handled salvadorii. To be quite frank about this whole ordeal the only reason i am going to try this is because of the amount of space and time i have available to me.

And to respond to your thought's about local zoos, etc etc. I'd maybe put that at around 40% of places that actually know what they are talking about and know how to interact/ take care of the animals they house...

We were talking about a hypothetical question if you remembered also, I am probably never going to breed these animals, but I'd like to have this waste of space on my property to be put to use.

And I'd like to put croc's into it. I know all of you can say no matter what knowlege or experiance I have with these animals you will all say I am still not ready.
But I think that I am, and I don't know how many times I have to say that I know these animals are not dog's nor any other type of domesticated animal. These animals in my mind are right behind some of the great apes in intelligence and cunningness.

Which mean's I will basically leave them alone, build the enclosure, have the gian't pond, the real plants and trees and let them do as they please. Building a giant eco system to sum it up... They will be completly left alone and not handled or anything of the sort, other than basic maintanence and feeding...

that croc looks pretty good, but from the photos maybe a tad bit dehydrated and a bit on the heavy side.

Well good luck then man. sounds like you do no your stuff.
and yes he was in horrible shape when I got him.
the long story is that I got a call at work one day from a guy who said he could no longer deal with the crocodile monitor he had. he told me it was 4 feet. Having kept many species over the last 7 years at that time I thought I Was ready. When he arrived he was huge almost 18 inches in girth. I was shocked the guy then went to tell me that he had been eating cats. he had kept him in a 6x3x3 with only a small water dish. My cage was no where close to be large enough at 12x4x4' but I set up a huge water area. and my gf and I spoon feed him olive oil to get him to pass the cats and bones and fur that he was not able to do in the first palce. I wish I could find pictures of when he left becuase it was one of my greatest accomplishments. when I got him in he weighed nearly 85 pounds when he left he was 40. he could tear around the cage no problems at the end of it when a owner of a serpentarrium called me and asked if he could buy him off me for the main display at the " zoo ". So of course I said yes his new cage is 16x12x8 and he is in heaven.
I miss him everyday.
But even when you think you are ready they will show you differently.
take care and good luck

Very bold, what some might call borderline arrogant.:screwy:

I am in no way arrogant. you are obviously into crocodilians have you seen what the aza did to terry cullen he was one of the only people working with chinese alligators. Now no one will be since the adult pair he had died when they raided his facility and stuck them in a cold garage with no water or food. If you have ever seen shows like zoo diaries. where all the people at the zoo really do not know what they are talking about. or you go to a komodo exhibit and to break apart the dragons they use a normal hose. and the male keeps attacking the female. the zoo's all think they are the only ones who should be working with any kinds of wild animals. which is just ridiculous. I went to a zoo last year and there was a guided tour going around they got a reticulated pythons cage and the women says these are the longest snakes in the world. "they can get 30 feet in length and can eat everything from rats, bats, rabbits, birds, pigs, goats and I was told by the curator that his good friend saw one eating a zebra in the wild" .
well first off they live in asia and indo so there fore there are no zebras.
I am in no way an expert and have only been working with reptiles for the last 11 years. But when talking to allot of these zoo staff I feel like I am no longer talking to some one with more knowledge then me.
Maybe its just the zoos around where I live but most of them should not have what they have since they do not have any more expeirence or knowledge on the animals they are keeping as I do.

sorry to be bold.

take care
