i actually have a 10 inch ornate atm and even tough they are really neat looking they do fade out alot as they grow older :( imo atm of the bichirs i've kept ( so far 5 x different ones ) i would say i prefer the delhezi colors , and SOME lapradeis i have a lapra but mine doesnt look good at all sadly i couldnt find brown / red sand anywhere so its color is all washed out :c
I'd disagree with ornates fading... my big one is about 18" and gorgeous. she's also very active in the water column and somewhat personable. i originally grew out 4 and kept the largest they all were brightly colored past 12"

theres some similar types that are more drab and more expensive

thats awesome really where i live there really is nooooooone keeping bichirs not really in shops or anythign so i dont have that much personal information with bigger bichirs i only seen from youtube really.. which i guess isnt the most reputable source. but thats great to hear truly , my ornate is also super active. i would easily say it moves around 100x more then my lapradei does ^^

They’re such cool fish!

I don’t like the looks of tanks with piles of them but one or two can really add interest to a tank

i have 5x bichirs atm which ye i guess can be a bit of a overkill , sadly there is only 4 inchers in shops where i'm from and being that small and ONLY eating a certain food and transported and all that i havent had great succes with the smaller bichirs so i did have in mind that one or 2 might pass sadly, ( i only really struggled with smaller bichirs im not a god at fish or anything but... since i heard bichirs are usually pretty hardy i like to think it wasnt all my fault :P )

its always best to start with groups anyways. fish will vary within a given spawn and having multiples can safeguard that you get what you want and also if you have a snafu in feeding or aggression you have backup plans.

I never buy 1 of any fish, i typically sell or trade the extras after about a year. private sales can yield some money (if you're lucky and reasonable) but your best bet is creating a relationship with your LFS and trade in for food and heaters or more growouts!

I dont remember if i already said so but i've only been in the hobby for about a year and i learn stuff everyday and i havent really gotten that connected to one store yet. ( there really isnt any good mom and pop stores here ) , Btw! how often do you feed your bichirs ? i find that since they seem to really enjoy more ''real fish'' food and not pellets but its rather depressing if they dont eat it all up at once since it goes bad rather quickly .. im thinking of feeding once every 2 days or maybe even 3 do i need to worry about my bigger bichirs going after the smaller ones ? ( i did have that incident when i first got my big lap .. tough it was SUPER underfed looking sick ) and can it be hurtful in any way to the smaller senegals ? they eat ALOOOOT . probaly gotten almost twice the size now in just 3 months.. :o

i feed every 2 days and sometimes i forget a day. watch out with bigger gravel they might swallow it, sand is the preferred substrate in my opinion.

delhezi, palma and senegal. Used to have orni.
Delhezi is around 3 years in my possession. Senegal around 4 or 5 years and palma is quite new (maybe 5 months).
I feed tilapia out of the supermarket, hikari sinking pellets, i grow my own guppies in a turtle tank, and bloodworms and sometimes some mealworms. they all eat out my hands, that way i have a fun time and it reduced left overs in the tank.

I have an 18” ornate and 2) 10” endlicheri.
I feed about 3 times a week, mixture of pellets and dried krill.
The ornate lives with an Oscar, vulture cat, black wolf and hard lipped barb
The endli’s live with a mixture of melanura and midas- same feeding.
the ornate grew like a weed, the endli’s are much slower
