720 8X3X4 Armatus Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Agreed, lots of good points ... lots of people have had problems with Army's hitting the top and many successful keepers with big Armies have done exactly that leave a foot of open space ... my 400 is also 1 inch Acrylic and only 30 inches tall, and I too have heard of tall acrylics bowing badley

Congrats on your Monster tank.... You must not be married covering half the entrance to the room and the whole fire place with this tank hehe.

You could always glue some 1" acrylic square stock inside all the seams for reinforcement. Tipping and pouring with #40 will also work but that tanks pretty heavy to be flipping around lol....if its made well u should be ok. Most all acrylic tanks bow at any thickness if you really look at them hard enough, some worse than others.

Would you consider selling me the stand and rebuilding a shorter stand. I have a 8x3x3 that I could use that stand for. My 900gal sits on a 40" high stand with tank being 36", it's up there, but I hope to move into a house with high ceilings?

I had a 300 that was 30" tall built from 1/2 acrylic. It bowed so much I sold it.

My 750 is only 30" tall and it's 3/4". I've seen similar heights built in 1".

The 375 corner tank I have is 30" tall and built from 5/8. Bows a lot. I left probably 5" from the top, I wasn't too keen on filling it all the way, and since the morays tend to get crazy at feeding and come several inches out of the water I thought it was a good idea NOT to fill it all the way.

4' is pretty tall. What I would do is fill it with 3' of water. Everyone says Armies are prone to smashing themselves on lids. What better way to sleep at night then by not filling it all the way and taking comfort in knowing your Armie won't smash himself as bad, your tank won't bow as bad, and you'll have better O2 exchange! Boom! Problem solved.

Wow bro you really made my day with your post that's the absolute best idea ever to just fill it 3 feet so the Armatus can jump for his Mackerel! :headbang2

ha that made me laugh so hard. I have 5 fish tanks 300, 240, 180, 150, and the 720. I act cool and tell my girlfriend, family and people that stop by I am a monster fish keeper and this is considered normal for us.

Thanks for your awesome post. I am gonna mention this to my bro from the LFS that's coming by this weekend to help me get the tank up and running.

As far as the tank, is the top a full piece of acrylic with holes cut in, or is it basically open with a crossbar or 2? To help me sleep better at night I put a ratcheting strap around the top of my 220 gallon tank to keep the top of the corners of the tank from spreading due to pressure ... it may look ugly, put it def adds strength ... just a thought, and if the tank has a canopy it will cover it anyway, as long as it can still slide over the strap ... 4ft is tall, def a lot of pressure, but will look awesome! You better get a snorkel and wetsuit if anything falls in to the bottom! Lol!

thanks for your advice i will mention it to my LFS bro stopping by this weekend to help me get the tank up and running. The top of the tank looks like 1 piece of Acrylic with middle of the tank the center overflow and then 2 holes 3x2 for getting inside to clean it.

DB makes a whole bunch of really good points. If you were to only fill it 3' that would make for some really interesting aquascape / paludarium options as well. I'd do it with fake grass all around the waters edge so it looks like a river bank and I'd have one of my returns set up to return off of a flat rock to similar a water fall.

When I make my BIG big tank I'm gonna get really creative. Can't wait! :D

Good idea with the whole waterfall effect, since my current is gonna be a power head inside the tank My return I can have blowing into the tank from above would be cool and simulate a waterfall on one side perfect. Any other ideas before I set it up would be greatly appreciated!

I was thinking if I rig up an extra Rio 2500 to this Exo Terra Water Fall (LARGE ONE) or one of those Pond Water Fall filter combos I can make a cool Da Kine water fall in one of the top corners then have hanging Exo Vines(not touching the water) and Exo Plants on the edge.

I decided to take the advice...

cut tower down, Weld 40 Acrylic Square supports and fill the tank 36-42" high (STILL DECIDING ON THE HEIGHT). If I decide next week to not reenforce with the Weld 40 I would go only 36" just for more piece of mind.
