720 8X3X4 Armatus Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not sure why not......

I'd personally go with 2 smaller, more efficient pumps...... That way if one fails you're not dead in the water. Depending how the sump is set up you might still need something for the bio tower if you're running one.

Sounds like a confusing sump that could use a revamp...... :)

COuldnt agree more.
If it were me I would hook up an ultima style filter up the the tower.
That way the water pulls down thru the tower...thru the bead filter and back into the tank.

Cant wait to see this thing filled.

Man, you guys must do stuff different out there...... lol

Pulls down through the tower? So unfiltered water through the bio tower? Don't understand how this could end well. Just like stuffing bio balls/ pot scrubbies in the overflows or running unfiltered water into a moving bed. Is there a face palm smiley? ;)

I'd vote a DIY radial flow separator -> bank of filter socks (200/100 socks to 100/50) -> moving bed. Side of bead filter (if adding one run independently from sump system)

Or you could use a bead and then run some of the bead return through the bio tower. I'd just be a little sketchy to combine a bead and a sump on the same loop cause if the right pump failed I don't see how an overflow could be avoided...

1" thick for 4' tall???? :( Regardless, I bet the Armies will love that thing!!!!

I been researching all day. Since my tank is actually 7/8 of an inch. I am even more worried. 1 Inch is as big as they even go for commercial grade aquariums on glasscages and fishtankdirect from my research and I have not found a tank over 1 inch Acrylic under 1200 gallons.

Does anybody know the worst scenario on a 720 4 feet high with 7/8 of an inch acrylic. Can the tank bow and actually snap injuring people or will it just form a crack that will leak all the water?

A big, thick black arowana for a topwater fish, and a big cat for the bottom (I think a niger cat would be awesome also) and about 100 cardinal tetras. They'd be too small for any of the big predators to eat and would look absolutely stunning shoaling around in a tank that size!

Oh, and we NEED new pics of this 20" army! :D

I have opportunity to get a giant black arowana I wonder if it has potential to show any aggression towards the Army?

That's a fantastic sized tank - i love those really tall tank.
The sump picture is very small - would be nice to get a better view of it?

I'd love to see the armatus that's going in there - just the one is it?

Niger cats are great by the way, i have two.

Thanks for your comment!!!

I will look into those Niger Cats they are very cool from the pics I saw. Do they have lots of nighttime activity?

Was thinking not to bother Armatus at night. So far I am doing all this for my Armatus. My buddy said he can get me a 30 inch Armatus. I might also grow a few smaller ones out in my 300 gallon and then have 3 big ones in the 720.
I was thinking on some mellow fish like a few 1 foot Archers and a dozen giant Leaf fish floating inside Anubias. Have a school of non aggressive breeding fish in there also.
Keep in touch!

how big is the aro? They could be ok if they are simalar sizes.

Hi bro the Arowana is over 2 feet at this time.
Armatus is 18-20" now. He was 16.4 when I measured him exactly about 6 months ago. I will do another measure when I transfer him to his new tank. I am curious to see how much he has grown.

As far as the tank, is the top a full piece of acrylic with holes cut in, or is it basically open with a crossbar or 2? To help me sleep better at night I put a ratcheting strap around the top of my 220 gallon tank to keep the top of the corners of the tank from spreading due to pressure ... it may look ugly, put it def adds strength ... just a thought, and if the tank has a canopy it will cover it anyway, as long as it can still slide over the strap ... 4ft is tall, def a lot of pressure, but will look awesome! You better get a snorkel and wetsuit if anything falls in to the bottom! Lol!

I had a 300 that was 30" tall built from 1/2 acrylic. It bowed so much I sold it.

My 750 is only 30" tall and it's 3/4". I've seen similar heights built in 1".

The 375 corner tank I have is 30" tall and built from 5/8. Bows a lot. I left probably 5" from the top, I wasn't too keen on filling it all the way, and since the morays tend to get crazy at feeding and come several inches out of the water I thought it was a good idea NOT to fill it all the way.

4' is pretty tall. What I would do is fill it with 3' of water. Everyone says Armies are prone to smashing themselves on lids. What better way to sleep at night then by not filling it all the way and taking comfort in knowing your Armie won't smash himself as bad, your tank won't bow as bad, and you'll have better O2 exchange! Boom! Problem solved.

DB makes a whole bunch of really good points. If you were to only fill it 3' that would make for some really interesting aquascape / paludarium options as well. I'd do it with fake grass all around the waters edge so it looks like a river bank and I'd have one of my returns set up to return off of a flat rock to similar a water fall.

When I make my BIG big tank I'm gonna get really creative. Can't wait! :D
