720 Gallon Plywood Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so i think im going to backtrack on my decision to use acrylic. my original plan was to use 1" thick acrylic. the more i think about acrylic and turtles, the more i realize that its bad idea and get scratched pretty bad. ive been playing around with some calculators online and getting varying results. for acrylic is was saying i needed 1.3 inch for my current dimensions. some glass calculators are saying i could use 3/4 inch, while others were suggesting 1.5 inch. with a water depth of ~30-32 inches, would 3/4 inch starfire glass be sufficient? whats yalls opinion?
I don' know a whole lot about this but I've been researching and seems to me properly braced 3/4" would be more then enough. But mayhaps someone with more experience will chime in.

3/4 inch should be fine. Looking at Custom Aquarium Website their 300 gallon 96x24x30(tall) uses 3/4 inch glass.

Really inspirational build. I love this stuff!
I've been thinking about making a similar turtle tank out of stacked brick with a front window.
Your thoughts on this Idea?

i thought long and hard on a stacked cinder block/concrete build, but ultimately decided to go with something non permanent. should i ever decide to sell my house i can just disassemble this tank. i do like the idea of a concrete/block tank though.

Did you ever get your glass?

you could also go tempered instead of thicker. 1/2" tempered is common for showers and such, local glass places could get it.

Glass has not been purchased yet, been slammed with work. Hopefully soon though.

i plan on sealing the tank today if all goes according to plan. ill try to document the process as much as possible and upload pics tonight.

well, got the tank sealed. just put the last coat of sanitred on. Took much longer than anticipated due to how cold my basement was. I decided to take a hybrid approach to how i was going to seal the tank. after doing a lot of research, it seems that most peoples issues with sanitred was bonding with glass or acrylic for the window. i built a frame for the window to sit in and used max acr inside the frame. i will be using Dow Corning 832 sealant to attach the glass to the frame.

put down a base coat of permaflex on all the joints and seams and gave it time to tack up.

Once the permaflex was tacky enough, i used the LRB/TAV mixture and went over all the joints and seams. Once that was tacky, coated the entire tank with a coat of LRB, Then followed that up with a final top coat of permaflex.

Overall the sanitred system was fairly easy to use. Caulking with the LRB/TAV mixture was a bit of pain, as the bags i was using keep busting out the back. i ended up just spooning it out and brushing it in.

Sorry for the lack of updates, had some medical issues over the last couple of months regarding my back topped off with two weeks of the Flu lol. Starting to make progress again. front panel has been installed. decided on 1" acrylic sealed with dow corning 832 sealant. going to give it about 2-3 weeks to cure then on to the leak test.
