75 G. PLEASE, I NEED HELP choosing Eheim canister ASAP!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they come already full of media too.

sorry, PS: husband knows less about Aq equipment than I do, so I have to tell him exactly what to get, otherwise he will bring me some kinda bloodthirsty fish. that's how I got a psycho male kenyi who lives in solitary confinement.

Thanks to anyone answering. I really appreciate your help.

I read hundreds of reviews when I bought my last canister(fx5) and found that if you want eheim go classic series other wise your overpaying for the classics reputation for a filter that is no better than a fluval.

Brian, thanks. that's good to know!

still need replies about some things on my list of considerations. like, are classics a pain for non-mechanical granny to dive inside of for maintenance, do all canisters auto-restart after short power outtages etc...that's important where I live.

I guess for the $$ I'm leaning toward classic as long as "I" won't end up blowing a gasket when it comes time to fiddle with rinses & partial media changes etc.
ANYONE?

The Classic Eheims are great filters though some people don't like that they don't have media trays to separate the 'hard' media. I just use an old colander to dump the media into when performing maintenance. They are simple to operate and long lasting. Most models come with the double taps (or quick disconnect) fittings that simplify disconnecting the filter for maintenance.

Canister filters that are properly maintained and installed according to the directions, should not leak or have any problems restarting after a power outage. You could also keep the canister in a small tote or kitty litter box if you are concerned about leaking filters but I only do this when I have a minor problem with a filter until I buy new parts, usually an o-ring or when I pick up a used canister.

I also use two Eheim canisters on a 75G tank (not the Classic series) but you should be able to use the spray bar (included) to help sweep the sand surface to keep it clean. You may also need to add a powerhead to help move the debris off the sand bed but that all depends on what other decorations you have in the tank.

Hope this helps!

@Dylz, can you be more specific about that "over sized spray bar"? length & how big-around for my tank. Would be great if I could get him to pick it all up for me and not have the mail order wait... but the online sale saves like 25% and free shipping.

well, you need about 4 feet of 1" cpvc pipe. 3/4" can be used as well. they will prob make you buy 8 or 10 feet but its pretty cheap. drill holes with a 1/8 bit about every inch to two inches along the pipe. tricky part is connecting the outflow tubes on each end. you will most likely need to to reduce down to 1/2'' or what ever size eheim hoses are. you can use a reducer coupling, or maybe some sort of bushing if you can find one. even a rubber coupling stolen from a fluval can work, haha, thats how i made mine. you may have to get creative depending on whats available to you.
now, depending on how you want it to sit in the aquarium you may need 6 "elbows" (3 on each side) to get you around the rim of the tank and connect to the filter hoses. then just use a few 1' or 3/4 " suction cup clips to hold it on the back of the tank. it will agitate the surface of the water very well, you wont have to use an air pump. it also keeps the hoses looking nice and neat with a custom touch. keep in mind the smaller the pipe and holes the greater the pressure it will be putting out so you can tweak it to your liking...anyway thats my simple design for an over sized dual injected spray bar, haha, hopefully that makes atleast some sense to you.

I did forget to suggest a model in my post above. I would use 2 Eheim 2217's for a 75G tank. Or you can use one 2217 and a power filter that hangs on the back of the tank.

ok Deeda & Dylz- THANKS! that help alot.

now I gotta tweak husband's thinking for the $$ ;-) --> B-day gift.

I'll print out Dylz' spray bar info & send it with him.
THANKS you guys... maybe my every other day WC's can be cut back soon.

hopefully I can call & find someplace with em in stock. if not, then it's just a mail order wait.

This is who I order my fish stuff from:

I've bought a LOT of fish stuff online and they're the best IMO. They also price match if you find something cheaper on any other website. They're in Los Angeles, depending on where you are in CA I wouldn't be surprised if it arrived the day after you ordered it using the cheap ground shipping. It gets all the way to Portland, OR from them in no longer than 3 days. They always ship same day IME.

I would also buy a 750 gph koralia evo powerhead to increase circulation in the tank. I personally wouldn't mess with a custom spray bar.

Once it's primed once, you're pretty much good to go unless you lose the siphon (like if you cleaned it). The most reliable way I've found to prime it is to start the siphon by sucking the output hose (and here come the jokes...) and then plugging it in.

Eheim canisters are great filters, but expensive. You are going to need two classic eheims to filter that tank. You could buy one Flluval FX-5 (another great canister filter) for the same price or less. Or better still, buy 2 AquaClear 110's (IMO the best filter ever made) and use them to filter the tank. If you don't like hang on the back filters and must go with a canister, get the FX-5. You will be happy you did.
