75 gallon question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am sorry, I did not mean to offend or in any way discount your opinion. OP asked a question. folks just answering it.

I wouldnt feel comfortable keeping the o in a 75 but the sd's would be even worse. I had a group in a 6ft tank and felt like it was too small...even if they arent gittery they get large.

Lots of nice aequidens that would do great in a 75. Very underrated fish

Could be a lot bigger, but I don't see an Oscar in a 75g being a problem. Just don't go crazy with it a Rubberlip or a Synodontis or some catfish would add to the overall health of the tank, so it would be better to do a couple small-medium cichlids so you can have room for catfish and plecos. A fish in a tank is not always the best way to do things. I don't think any tank is FULLY-healthy without commensals and bottom-feeders. Shoot, even a Chinese Algae-eater....something to clean-up, maybe a few of them.

I would more likely do something more of a mixed bag, like a JD as boss, and some smaller stuff, a convict or 2, a Jewel or 2, FM, maybe a few Acaras or small Geophagus. Oscar's gonna bore the heck outta you in no time. A bigger-ish one 8-10", and a couple smaller cichlid under 6" and some bottom-feeders should live harmoniously as long as you make plenty of hide-spaces and caves . You can get rocks from a local stream or other CLEAN water source and submerge them in boiling water to sterilize them before using in the tank. Create a series of archways along the back of the tank big enough for each cichlid to hide completely out of the others' sight and try to make sure every cichlid has at LEAST 2, preferably 3 caves each so they won't fight over territory. Making them somewhat equal in size by comparison will help this as well. I like to mix PVC pipe elbows or joints/3-ways into the mix as well

A pair of sajicas or Honduran red points or simular is more suitable in a tank that size.
Even a small group of thorichthys complete with livebearers as dithers.
South America offers lots of choice for a 75,
Keyholes or some of the gymno geos would be a nice fit.A pair of acaras such as ports or blue acara would also work.Their are pike cichlids suitable. Or a small group of angels or festivums. You could also add tetras small catfish like corys or hoplos.
I feel all the above much more appealing than one poor Oscar that can hardly move.I also feel that it would add much more long term interest for the keeper. But then again that may just be me.

I have Gymnogeos and I read 10"? You think a pair of those would be good for a 75g?

Most gymno species won't grow bigger than 8 inch and that's just males.Females will only reach half the size of the male.So yes they are nice fit for a 75 on their own with some suitable tetras.
8 inch is is quite generous for this group I believe most are more near 6 inch depending on species.

Lots of fish would thrive in a 75g, but I wouldn't keep SDs in anything less than a 6ft tank.

As far as oscars go, I keep an O and a green Severum in my 75g. They've been together since they were tiny and it's been about 2.5yrs now. I can keep nitrates no more than 20ppm between a weekly fin level WC.

It's not a combo that would consistently work, but it's working for me so far. Would I rather have them in a 6ft 125? Absolutely.

I agree with Stanzzz7 about the Gymnos, I have kept about half dozen species from that genus, and they seldom reach max lengths of more than 7". I consider 7.5" adult size fish to be the max size fish, for a 75 gal tank. In a 75 gal you might be able to keep 2 males and 4 females. They usually do best in harem type groups with lots of females and few males. And you won't need a heater, in fact I believe for this genus, heaters are detrimental
