the subsequent baffles in your sump must be slightly lower than the previous ones in order for water to actually flow through the sump. exp, the baffle after your moving bed chamber could be 6in high, that means the baffle going into your bamboo chamber must be 5.5 or 5in and the one exiting your babo chamber must be even lower than that. i would worry about a power head to much unless your using a very bouyant media in you moving bed, most movine bed filter are sufficiently moved with simply a bubble want.

as you can see in this video the moving bed filter is actually inside the tank and there is a powerhead in there but it is simply being used to move water out of the moving bed filter and back into the tank, the actual movement of the media is left to the two bubble discs. in addition you can also see there is very little media in the filter, this is the correct way to start the moving bed filter and once the media in there has a sufficient layer of bacteria built up you add more, look on the right side of the screen in the video and you can see another video of the same filter with increased media.

Ok got ya with the bubble disc vs the power head . The only thing is I am still lost about the baffles ah is it possible to edit my fancy 1D drawing .. it would be a big help if possible .

No new help on this topic well I just spoke to a guy who has some 3/8 plexi at a great price the only thing is the size its 60" x 24" and he wants $50 each so I think my Sump size is about to change ..I'm thinking 60" long 18" front to back and 24" tall

Hey vexproductions

First of all, that's going to be a beautiful setup! Definitely keep us updated with pics!

As far as the sump goes:
-Changing it 24" tall is a good idea. The taller the better.
-For the K1 moving bed, you will need a screen either over the top of the bed, or covering the entrance and exit of the bed to prevent spillover into other sections. As mentioned before, a strong air pump with several air discs will work well.
-For the plant section: Any plant that grows rapidly will suck up nitrates pretty quick. What I and others here have had success with is the house ivy plant called Pothos (see it here). With this plant you can just dangle the roots in the water and it will grow like crazy in low light. For submersible plants, anacharis and hornwort work well, but require lots of light. You could do something like this diagram for the plant section:

vex here is my crack at it. the orange lines are for height reference. every sump design i have seen adjusts the divider to direct flow. i think if the wall heights were the same you wouldn't get much mixation ( is that even a word? :nilly: ) in the chamber. water would tend to skim across the top into the next chamber as soon as it filled up.

cant wait to see the start up thread. keep the pics coming. dave

I just realized that this setup will not work. The water level in the scrubby/drip plate section will be as high as the wall for the K1 bed next to it, so the scrubbies will be totally submerged. You should go for pure scrubbies. This will give you plenty of mechanical and bio filtration. If you still wanted plants, you can do something like this:

+1

You should also need some sort of filter after the plants to save the pumps from plant debris. i ran my plants before the wet/dry section to raise the water level.

I think that having a sump for fresh water is great!! Instead of bamboo I would seriously look into an algae turf scrubber, especially if you are going to have big fish in there. Good luck!
I agree, for some species even peat moss and if its a tank for N/A natives you may not even need heaters.
