90G Nicaraguan Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks pretty good. How many fish are you putting in and are you going to add anything else to fill the upper region?

Thanks.... :) I have ordered 12. Will be weening out most of them hoping a pair or two to be formed.. Gonna watch their behaviour and decide on the decor if more is required.
Any suggestions on keeping them? I thought of species only tank, any idea how many I can keep in there?

set up looks good :)

Cheers bro...

Looks awesome, I'm keeping Nics now for the first time and love their personality, can't wait to see your tank stocked

Mine love to dig so the sand will be great, I started with two females and a male and got a pair almost immediately. I've had eggs once but no fry, they haven't seemed overly aggressive even with eggs. I have them with a pair of sajica and 3 Silver dollars which will have to move soon as they are growing the quickest by far

Yea I got the sand for their digging behaviour. Possible to show me your Nics? Do they grow fast?
How many you suggest in my tank? And the ratio as well ;)

Hi all,

Been long since I spent any time in setting up a Cichlid tank. Since I am able to source some of the nicaraguensis fries, I will be dedicating this tank for it.
Tank size is 4'x18"x2'
Substrate white sand
Filtration 30G sump with a 1400 LPH pump
One wave maker
Overflow is with a O box and a durso stand pipe.
The sump is seeded with active media.

Will be receiving the fries in day or two :)

That is a beautiful tank! I particularly like how you arranged the wood. :)

Great looking setup! I have kept and bred Nics and really enjoyed them. I found them to be a bit tricky to pair up so starting with a large group like you are doing is definitely the way to go. They are also pit spawners as their eggs are non adhesive. I initially started with a single female and then ended up acquiring a male in hopes they would pair. They seemed to go through all the motions but just never spawned. So, when I came across two more females I picked them up as well. A week later, the male had paired up with one of the new females and I had fry shortly there after. Once the fry went free swimming the parents were very aggressive and claimed 3/4 of my 125gal. They can be pretty rough on each other so I would try and keep a group of either 1M/3F or 2M/4F to help spread out aggression.

Good luck!

Thanks Chris for sharing your experience. I must say u first thought of making a similar setup like the one in your signature after looking at your pic on google :D. Couldn't do it as I was short of few pieces of wood.
Anyways, good to know that my inspiration was from you, thanks.
As per the supplier who is actually a hobbyist, the sizes are at 2-3". So would it be possible to sex them at this age?
And for 90G what is ur suggestion? 2M & 4F ? Is it too much for this tank?
Also can you let me know on their growth? Fast or slow?
Sorry for bombarding you with so many q's :D

Will be tweaking with the setup as I would be making more caves for them.

And btw... Your pair looked amazing....

Cheers...
