9500 gallon container tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I actully am thinking seriously about texturing the interior walls with fake stone and then sealing over that...

The unit is EASILLY strong enough to hold that much water pressure and the door will be welded shut and the latches removed. I will probubly need to weld a ladder to the side of it to get to the filter and the pumps not to mention feeding the fish LOL.

:D ya they drop them off at Walmart for the Sales and then pcik them up :)

this has been done befor wher someone in denmark( a ray fantic joined up inbetween 3-10 of theese and made a 200,000 gallon tank. i wish i could remember the link.

I have the link but he used his in a differant way...the containers became the walls in much the same way as the container home I designed for our ranch. NO I'm not in transportation but looking into these things for a underground home tends to give one a LOT of information and obviously some ideas as well. The tank in denmark was a perminate structure while I'm trying to address the problem of taking a true monster aquarium with you.

What would you put in it? Cracking idea though! So you cut the holes in the outer wall, and are left with a corrugated rim.... How you planning to fit and seal the window? I've seen it done but dont know how you would do it....

I was looking into containers as an option for buiding an underground house here too...its a funky idea. Decided to go for rammed earth though as its even cheaper... But the price of land here is prohibitive now, so we're off to Germany...got the room for a container too so let me know how you get on sealing it!!!!!!!!!!!

This reminds me of a tank I saw at a sporting goods store once. I don't know if it was bass pro shops or who but they brought in a tank to the parking lot of the store. I don't remember if it was the back of a semi. or a container like the one you posted. Anyway, they had all kinds of sport fish (bass etc.) and a guy was on top casting and demonstrating how the fishing lures worked. Very cool!

This is the link for Franks site - I believe he's in the Netherlands, not Denmark - and he goes through every step of building "MR X's" megatank WITH pictures - greatest project I've ever seen!

Just go down the index on the left hand side of his home page (which has one of my all time favourite aquarium pics on it!) and click on MegaTank. If you've not seen this before, prepare to be amazed!

The containers that Wolf is talking about number in their millions around the world. They are the industry standard for international goods transportation, so I would imagine there must be hundreds of "broken" ones lying around international ports.

Since he wants to weld the doors shut and is only looking at one for it's structural properties, I imagine that it may be possible to source one for transport costs alone.

Maybe try calling insurance companies and see if they have any claims that ended with an "unusable" container that they need to get rid of, "selling" it for removal costs alone (rather than them having to repair or crush it). Worth a try and would massively cut costs.

Or try calling freight companies or the nearest transportation centre.

Then that would leave more cash for bigger windows.....

I first would like to say that I think this is a great idea and would love to see you make it happen.

However here are some things to consider before you commit.

What part of california do you live in? There are state, county, and municipal codes to; consider some of which vary by loaction. While it may be obvious that its a temporary structure to you, the govt may not feel the same way.... and even some temporary structures require permits.

Temporary or permanent you will need a foundation, the reasons why should be obvious. The type of which will vary depending on what part of cali you live in. Since you most likely live in a residential or rural area its not likely that geotechnical engineering surveys/analysis have been done that would accomodate an easy process for design of the foundation. If you do live in a residential zone the data may be there, but this is very different than a house and some work would need to be done to design the foundation.

Permits and design/construction of the foundation could be costly, though not necessarily a deal breaker if you are commited to it. I think you are over simplifing the cost as well. It will be much more to deliver one of these containers to a private residence than it does to a repeat contract customer. The fuel alone would likely exceed $250, and the shipping company is not going to unload it for you, you are looking at needing a large forklift with large rigging, or a small crane, either of which will cost you at least $1000 just to move on site.

Not trying to rain on your parade, just want to get you started off in the right direction before you get in too deep.
