9500 gallon container tank

I think I mentioned this in your other thread - but I seem to have a hard time trusting steel in a corrosive environment. I would want to use some kind of redundant sealing - if you get a single nick in your epoxy the rusting/bubbling will start. Maybe epoxy sealant with a flexible coating like sanitred over top?

O, and in a tank this size, why not use a big airlift for filtration, like the guy with the big ray tank did? seems to me a 40 foot long tank leaves plenty of room to section off 3-4 feet at one end for filtration, then it's all self contained, with no appendages on top.

A lot of the containers have marine plywood bottoms, I dont know how solid the joint with the steel would be...I'd prob use some kind of plastic pond lining...

I've definatly looked into redundant sealing. but as I said previously...these containers ARE marine rated and take years to show the slightest serface rust even when stored on the deck of a ship.

Copper paint as a first coat...then a heavy coating of liquid bed liner. (I found a brand thats safe when dry.) Then the foam/plaster rockwork attached to the sides/back...painted and then sealed.

People are always building and sealing plywood tanks. Steal may well rust but wood rots...this is a LOT stronger and can even be lined with marine plywood if necessary. I'd rather not do it that way if I can avoid it...

Its gonna be AMaZING Dude....I was in the LFS last night and they wanted £600 quid for a 60 gallon tank and stand....withn a second hand container you'd nearly get it done for that!!!!! I doubt they would rust in fresh water...like you say they have a long marine life...Just imagine swimming with your fish!!!!!!

I'm gonna fill mine with neons....thousands of neons!

When you say you located the channels to hold the acrylic in place, do you mean something that will fit in all the grooves of the wall on one side and have a flat surface on the other side to be able to mount the acrylic to? If this is what you mean do you have a picture of it or is it online somewhere that we can see. This seems to be the biggest challenge in this idea, getting the window sealed tight against a non flat wall

this has been done befor wher someone in denmark( a ray fantic joined up inbetween 3-10 of theese and made a 200,000 gallon tank. i wish i could remember the link.
omg

I would think that any good welder could fabricate a tract to drop your viewing window into, then you could build up with epoxy filler to the glass or acrylic. do you have to reinforce the inside so it will not blow out an end or a side?

what a great idea though

What I found is an extruded aluminum channel that can be cut an welded in place The channel cross section is in the shape of a lower case h <---- the bottom section of the h slips over the cut edge of the window opening and the upper section forms a grove to hold the silicone bead and the acryllic pannel. The channel is tack welded in place and the open spaces are filled with non-toxic expanding foam. The company I located has channel stock like this on hand and is willing to custom manufacture channel in case the container tanks ever go into any sort of limited production.
