I realize that in this hobby there are always going to be things you don't know, and you don't even know you don't know them! I would like to start a thread where people chime in random bits of knowledge about things they have found out about this hobby; either the easy or the hard way. This will allow people to find the answers to the questions they never thought to ask. It can be about anything, information on fish, lighting, filtration, compatibility, feeding or anything that comes to mind. I really hope everyone is willing to share their knowledge not just to satisfy my curiosity, but also anyone else who is fairly new to the hobby.

I'm working on a "water parameters made easy" mini article that I will post in this thread after getting home from dinner with my wife. I may not know much but I plan to share!

Don't forget to Dechlor - killed some fish this way

If something looks off take a sample to test late, and do an immediate water change.

Always over filter, It pays off for sure.

African Cichlids and small tiger Oscar don't mix, Tried worked for a short time then they got aggressive so I sold em.

Red eared sliders get big and need alot of space and have quite a few requirements.

Always keep back up equipment and salt/meds.

ALWAYS Quarantine new fish and Always have a hospital tank.

Red Tailed Sharks hate their own species and will fight, They also can be an mean to other fish.

Bumble Bee catfish from Wal-Mart are cute, But they hide 99% of the time.

Watch your tanks when filling they will over fill.

Check decorations with nooks and crannys thoroughly and set them in a bucket/tub of fish water just incase. Learned this lesson by killing a rosy red minnow and almost killed an African Cichlid.

Top off your tanks, It makes em so much quieter if you have HOB filters =).

Filter cartridges don't need replaced every 2 weeks like the box says, They can be washed out and re-used a couple times but do start to fall apart after good use.

Thats all I can think of right away

"that's all i can think of right away"? damn i'd imagine u'd write a book lol very good info though

So many does and don'ts. Over medicating, Not making sure tank is covered well for jumpers. Forget to turn canister back on after water change. Forget to unplug heaters when refilling if heater is above the water. Forgetting to replug heaters after water change. Leaving the water hose unattended when filling your tank! I've had the hose fall off the tank before:irked:

does it happen to cause a cloudy/white like infection...? or spots on the skin that looks like it's been burned..?
