Okay then in a 55 gallon could i possibly get a pair of jack dempseys and if so could any kind of catfish be tolerated in this aquarium

yah i was thinking like a pictus or a more active scavenger catfish

Its doable, but a pictus grows about 4 inches,so the JDs may end up trying to eat it down the road.Do you already have the 55 gallon or is a tank you are thinking getting one to put the JDs in?

Already have tank cycling for about another 2 weeks so it could work could you reccomend a diffrent active scavenger more suitable for this tank

jack dempsey male get too big for a 55gallon..... A pair of firemouth would be fine.

It takes a long time for a male JD to even get pass the 8 inch mark though,if he is even upgrading to a larger tank down the road, the 55 gallon would work for now.

so 10 inch male jack is to big for 55 i thought that would be plenty of room but what would pictus catfish be fine with a pair of Jacks or can you reccomend another type that would work better

Well the width of the 55 gallon is 12 inches,it could stress him out then,if you plan on upgrading to a much bigger tank in 2 years, then yes the 55 gallon would work as a temporary grow out tank.
