Actually,since you mentioned featherfin catfish,that is the one my brother has.They are very active,they are far better then owning a pleco honestly,they move around alot,they don't sit in one spot for hours or more.
Be real honest with yourself with the chances of you upgrading your tank. If you are more likely to keep the 55 long-term, stick with a fish or group of fish that will be able to live comfortably in the tank. Just barely having an inch or two of room to turn around isn't ideal conditions for large cichlids. Breeding pairs behave a lot differently than solitary fish. They are generally more aggressive during spawning and will hurt or kill tankmates that don't have the room to flee. There are quite a few smaller cichlids that will live a long and healthy life in a 55. Check the sticky in this forum or visit some other sites for a list of smaller candidates. Also I wouldn't put a Featherfin Cat in with any breeding pairs. The Featherfin will happily eat their eggs at night. Featherfin should also not be housed with slower, docile fish. They have a habit of sucking on the slime coat of those type of fish causing infections and leaving them open to diseases.
