A little Tiger update.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd say my Dorado is maybe slightly larger than my tigers, or the same size ... he's def heavier though since he has a thicker profile ... he can be a jerk if he wants, but really he doesnt bother the tigers much although I'd be nervous as they are like adding a stick of dynamite ... biggest problem I'm having is my 2 Goliaths are fighting ... 2nd eye injury in 2 months to my biggest and prized goliath from the other smaller one chasing him, and this injury was a pretty bad one ... its clearing up now, I'm hopeful in a couple weeks it will be healed, but it may not heal 100% which is very upsetting, only time will tell ... starting to think the 3rd Goliath that I lost played a huge role in downplaying aggression, although the remaining 2 dont fight often, all it takes is an eye nip for permanent damage ... fish with teeth are so dangerous ... I'll get some pics up soon to see the Dorado/ATF size relationship for you

I may be wrong but I'm hoping that my hunch of Brassy's being a little more tolerant of other fish then the Franky's are, ends up panning out, but maybe it just comes down to the individual fish? I have a Franky that is fine with other fish and a Franky that will try to lock jaws with anything that challenges it. Too early to tell with Robert cause I've never kept anything with him that could challenge him yet, but seems fine with smaller peaceful fish.

Seems the guy across seas is having good luck with his Brassy and Tigers, so it kind of got me wondering.... :D

Looking forward to your pics.....

Wait- I thought you had an aimara...?

I included aimara instead of lacerdae because lacerdae is a mesopredator. Their peak size is 4 kg as opposed to aimara's 40.

I see what you're saying about the dorados. My thoughts on the subject was that they are so similar and the brassy is so hard to get that rather than make a requirement for both for a 'grand slam', just to have one. That's why with the tigers, even though I listed three species, I didn't use species names.

Even to the uninitiated, GATF, BATF and TATF are easy to tell apart.

I'm gonna go start a thread about this so we don't have to have such a derail.

Rob, I LOVE derails. Always leads to better conversation. ;) Please, the bigger the train wreck the better.

I do have an Aimara..... Here's a pic of them the first week together. Have seen no issues whatsoever, and if anything it seems watching the Lac pig out seems to give the Aimara the urge to eat a little more then usual..... Lacs got the Aimara by probably 5".

4 KG? :WHOA: I've always thought they got close to the same max size as Aimara. I thought I've seen videos from over seas of Lacs with similar sized Aimara, both huge. Maybe they're just different Aimara varients?

Possible wrong info? The pic I saw on the top of the page stating 4KG looked more black wolf to me then Lac? I'd buy them going 4 KG, sounds about right for a fat 16-18"er doesn't it? Maybe I'm sadly mistaken and just wishfully thinking, but I thought Lacs got huge.

I'd like to see the combo of odoe and ATF together in a large tank. I've considered getting another vatf but my odoes are just growing too fast. You should have quite the tank in the future.

I'd like to think it could be possible.... :) But growth rates definitely throw a wrench into things. My Odoe aren't much longer then the Tigers but they're like 5 times the mass and have some fat mouths. I'm guessing they'll have to hit the point where they slow down at 10-12" before the Tigers even begin to make up any ground in catching them..... No clue where the wolves fit in either in the growth equasion. Will they be able to eat the Odoe by then? It may be a sweet tank someday, but it could be a while before everyone's big enough to elude those fat flat fish. I think the growth rates all being so different will prevent everyone being able to be in the same tank, but maybe it'll work with enough dithers???

I'll admit that I'm not anywhere near as familiar with the wolves as I am with the other toothy tetras. For lacerdae, I did a quick search on them and I can't find a confirmed size larger than 4.3 kg. That is on fishbase though. Fishbase often has trouble getting their pictures right, but I've found that their actual info is generally pretty spot on. They reference their info, but images are uploaded by hobbyists and fishermen who don't necessarily know what they hell they're talking about.

I want to try to learn the wolves, too, but it's taken me a year and a half to have mastered the five tigerfish species. I don't know if I have it in me to learn the 15 (?) different species of wolf in three different genera in the same way. I kind of want try to get them down like I have many other genera, but I'm just not as interested in benthic fish outside of a few catfish species as I am in active, dynamic pelagic predators. I just don't have the motivation to learn them. :/

Wolves are like Dorado, they become much more appealing after experiencing their personalities first hand. Both seem to me much more "managable" since they seems so much more aware of their surroundings then the open water predators..... I'd love to have a great white, but in reality, if I was to get a shark it would be a Wobby. I think it would be much easier to keep an Aimara happy then any other of the apex Characins.

Got me super curious about the Lacs now...... 30 inches long but only 4 KG? That's one skinny wolf isn't it?

I don't blame you on not wanting to try to tackle the wolves. So many variants it would be like climbing Mt. Everest. You'd need Seichii's help.... lol.

Fishbase also lists the max length at 75 cm, or 29". Ten pounds for a two and a half foot fish seems lite for any species; a 29" tiger would be about 25 pounds.

I'm inclined to agree that the wolves are likely easier to keep happy than any of these other monsters. Probably much easier to care for, too. I know they sometimes live in rapids, but they're also found in water that would kill any of the open water species.

Big wolves are some of the most impressive freshwater fish out there!

I have no doubt that I'd be able to tackle them, I just don't want to. My heart isn't in it like it is with the tigers. I've tried to solicit help with the wolf fish sticky for months now with no luck. I even stuck it already in an effort to get participation but I've not had any luck. :(

I admire what you've done for the species you have..... Wolves are just too much of a mess. Just look at the Lac info.... Wolves are very thick creatures, if a ATF would be 25 pounds at 29", I'd expect a wolf that size to be quite a bit heavier.

I love the wolves, no doubt, but I also have no patience for the kind of stuff you do with these write ups. I've got wayyy to much going on in my basement to spend any time reading about a species who's info is so jumbled it may take months to even get an idea.

I'd rather be pluming and I'm really starting to hate pluming.

Haha we're in about the same boat then. As you know, I work in emergency ops for 24 hour shifts at a time. Normally, I don't have an emergency on my shift, I'm just there to handle emergencies that pop up flawlessly. Which I do. This gives me time to pore over these write ups. Now that I'm actually getting into gear to get out of the army, I've got a lot less free time on my hands. I'm also- right now- working my last regular 24 hour shift. I'll probably do more to cover for other guys, but I'm off the schedule after tomorrow. The 24 hour shifts also explain my acute insomnia. Once I'm actually out and working a normal 9-5 again and I have my wife and kid again, I expect I won't be on quite so much anymore. I sent them home to live with my in-laws until I get out. We're saving money plus the wife pulled down a $12/hr job. Woot! In a way, I'll be happy to not have so much free time for MFK. It'll be nice to have a life again. LOL. I'm not leaving though. ;)

AWESOME!
