A little Tiger update.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
FWIW, tigers will always fight as they get larger. It is a natural part of their life cycle and is unavoidable.

The reason for this is simple. When smaller; VATF, TATF and FATF are all schooling species that form marauding packs of like sized juveniles. As they reach maturity, which for those three species is at about twelve inches, they leave the school and become increasingly solitary and intolerant of congeners.

Brevis and goliath never form packs which explains why they tend to do poorly with other tigerfish. These two species will also become increasingly intolerant of other tiger fish at maturity, which is reached at about fifteen inches.

As some of you may have figured out, I've given up on trying to cohabitate a group of tigers. This new data is why. I suppose I should update the Guide with this info as it really is quite relevant to our hobby.

What fun would this hobby be if it was predictable?

I'd guess some tigers to live in harmony long before an Aimara living with feeder sized Masheer, rays, and another wolf in a community setting....... ;)

Gotta keep in mind this isn't the wild, it's a glass box we stuff food in. Fish may be dumb, but are we even dumber to believe they'll behave the same as they would in the wild when they know the smorgasboard happens every night round 7:30 in a fish tank where the Amazon runs into the Nile and shrimp, talapia, and Massivore rains from above by the handful????

Lets keep an open positive vibe here....... :)

So anyone curious about how this lil experiment ever ended up? :)

They ended up offing the silver dollars last week. Thinking they're getting cranky about the lack of massivore lately.

These guys reside with my most most prized rays, a pair of Falkneri. I did end up loosing one of the Tanzys to a Marble, which prompted the move. The Falks seem much less interested in preying on fish. Seems to work well, would really like to get this group into a bigger tank soon.

Great looking tigers! What size are they now?
