actually romaine lettuce is not a good choice of food

marine herbivores such as tangs and surgeons(spelling) need marine algae to substain good overall health

if you feed them a staple of terestrial plant the fish will eventually waste away

terestrial plants just dont meet the special dietary requirments of tangs
at least its eating something

This was my reation after reading your story :wall:

This should've been your reation :nutkick:

I wonder what his tank looks like and if he's doing this :duh:

well if he didnt feed them what would they have ate? what would live rock feed them? i dont have a salt water so i am asking. the same lfs chain near me would never give that info.. at least i hope not.. i think the guy just jumped in with much less than half the info he needed and used no common sence. he made the mistake why ask you to pay for it.. he needs to ask for his money back from the person that gave him the bad info.

You could actually maintain a few types of fish without added food if you had enough live rock, If you get a chance take a look at a tank that contains big piles of healthy live rock, it will be swarming with tiny critters and algaes. I bet you could keep a couple of pygmy pipe fish or redstriped cling fish in a 29g that was 1/2 full of healthy live rock without added food.
My brother once forgot about a 5g all glass FW tank when he went off to school, he was gone 9 months. It was just glass shrimp and guppies, not even fancy ones. When he got back I was a solid mass of plants and algae, my mom didn't know what was in it so she had just topped it off with water everycouple days when she watered the plants. When my brother went to dump it he found it full of guppies, shrimp, and scuds. He gave everything to one of his friends.

The guy was still an idiot.

Quite a few species of saltwater fish really shouldn't be kept in an aquarium that doesn't have plenty of seasoned live rock. Dragonets are usually the first to come to mind here (scooter blennies, mandarin Gobies, etc.) but most reef fish are going to fare better with plenty of micro-fauna and little critters to eat to supplement "The Food That Falls From The Sky" or doesn't as is the case here. Btw, i work @ a local fish store and i know that people like the one described here really aren't rare and it's very frustrating when they get upset that you are trying to help them.

I had a guy come into my shop to return a fish that died he had bought about a week ago. I do gaurantee the fish I sell so I checked all the normal things and it all seemed ok (water quality was ok, fish was not beat up, etc.) THe fish was however thin, so I asked if it was eating ok, The guy wasn't sure. I asked, "how can you not be sure, did it eat when you fed it?" His responce was "I havn't been feeding it, you didn't say it needed to be fed when I bought it."

you should have reminded him that he also needs to do water changes also on top of feeding a fish.

If i owned a store, i would take pictures of customers with their stupid saying kind of like a shrine for stupid people.

:) " i didnt know fish needs food to survive."

i think there should be a starter fish keeping paper.. filled with the obvious stuff like feeding and water changes and so many fish in big tanks.. then when ppl ask simple questions you can hand them the paper and they can look through it before buying a fish.. it might save alot of fish and ppls nerves.. i didnt know much about salt water so thanks for that advice guppy. id love to have a salt water one day.. just stocking up on knowledge first.. dont feel like jumping into it like i did freshwater.. i made some messed up mistakes too. but ive learned much since then thanks to fish books, internet and MFK.. MFK is my first choice for info because you guys have been there.. not just write this stuff for a living.
