a poor mans pond...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
this is the nature filter i built. i need help with doing it right. it's on top of waterfall...
i tried to fill (close to the end of the top part, before it makes the 90deg. turn) with 1b stone(sort of a pyramid shape{you know, high in the middle tapering off to the bottom on both sides}) but the water didn't flow thru the stone fast enough(and that was when the stone was clean) so i leveled the stone to where the water, now just flows over the it. and planted plants in it... how do i fix this??????? should i have used the 2b stone or what???

You really did a great job, it's impressive !

It must be a real satisfaction to watch your pond.

Keep up the good work :)

oh yeah, it is great to be out there... today the koi were up on the top level trying to get some warmth from the sun. air temp got close to 60deg, but the suns rays were really intence when the rain clouds finally moved out...

What is the size of 1B and 2B stone?

We use #6 and #8 wash stone here. #6 is about 1/2" and the 8 is about golfball size. It looks like the plants do just fine in the filter. Seems like you did it right. Are you still looking for more flow?

1b suppose to be 1", 2b=2", but the 1b is actually about 1/2" forget what the 'b' stands for.(i can find out)
but anyway, is it ok for the water to just flow 'over' the stone and not thru it?

i was lowering and raising a pump in the pond and thought i put a hole in the liner. at this point i went from loosing 1" of water a week to 1" of water a day...
so i started to drain the pond...

there was no hole... turned out to be just evaporation...
so i took advantage of draining the pond and decided to put a couple of planters on the ledges...
i lined under the boulders with the underlayment. and i used underlayment under the garden soil and behind the boulders so soil doesn't come out... (i kept reading to use garden soil)
