A riddle for the Geophagus lovers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow you do not see this very often! That is a beautiful fish my friend! I once seen a altifrons and winemilleri hybrid but that was the only hybrid up until now

The fish in the picture does look like my G. brachybranchus. Did you breed these two fish personally?

*****The answer*****

The father is Geophagus Tapajos Red Head like you all said,
But the mother is - Geophagus Brachybranchus.

So are we saying this is a hybrid or that the genus of the species is actually related and not a different classification? I always thought you could "hybridize" geo's...I saw no reason that you couldn't...you can cross different cichlids, so why not earth eaters? He/She is a looker! Nice job!

Thanks Joe, I knew you'll like it.

No, a friend of mine did it, and gave me one as a present.

I never heard about it before, thaught it will be a good info to share here.
And thanks. :)

you may have just stumbled upon the next generation of designer cichlids.

This confuses me: if geophagus can cross-breed, why does this never occur in tanks with different geo species.. vs CA stock, where hybridization is a "given"? Seriously, EVERYone mixes geos!

Thats a good question.
I was hoping that the experts here can give us the answer.
