a "WTF?" moment

All I can say is, if you were in the divers position you would have done that. That grouper could have caused his death doing what it did. I mean seriously, the guy swung the knife a few times to back it off and it kept coming back.

What more can you do?

the difference between a 4-5ft Grouper and a bear is that a bear can kill a human easily but a Grouper can't.

Ok then, a coyote. That fish was probably about 50-100 lbs. I can say that with exteme confidence as I have caught more fish in a day than most avid fishermen catch in a lifetime (Alaskan guide here). A coyote tops out at about 30 pounds with some northern variants at about 60. If a firickin coyote attacks me, it probably won't kill me, but that that sucker still dies.
I'm legally aloud to take a human life if I feel that mine is at risk, why should a fish be above that?
Peter Benchly is a ficition writer, not a biologist. We have invaded countless species' "territories" and, right or wrong, will continue to do so. Doesn't mean we as humans deserve to die.
Thank you guys for supporting human life above all others. To those who think that we are equal... Look at the house you live in, the car, you drive, and the fish you keep. Think about it.

I know youre young and inexperienced ( I am too at 23 for that matter ) but let me tell you from experience that fish dont have to be big to think they can eat PART of you. They dont understand hands, feet, fingers. They just see what appears to be tasty little morsels and go for it.
THats what i thought when unhooking a 15 pound channel cat i thought it cant hurt me but in the end i lost a lot of skin Also grouper have some wicked teeth. The femoral arterie is really close to the skin.

Nobody wants to see anything killed. But if the killing was for nothing, then I would be upset. I think this killing was justified, because the fish made things complicated and could have caused the diver death. Again, put yourself in the divers shoes.

how many people here have ever been night diving? I've done it in relatively shallow waters (20' max), and it's one of the scariest things i've ever experienced. When a school of small fish popped into my floodlight i almost died from the shock (it was my first time). I can't imagine a grouper that size attacking me at that depth. I am amazed he kept his cool well enough to knife it, and I think he is fully justified

Without getting into the debate here, I'm fairly certain the book mentioned is Peter Benchley's "Shark Trouble." I believe that it was his wife or acquaintance that was nipped by a grouper when she went into the water during her menses, the blood of which attracted the fish.
