So, with the help of all the wealth of info here, I decided the Abei was a much better fit for my current tank. With the help of one of the forum members here I was also able to track one down, since nothing in the San Diego area seems to carry any puffers besides green spotted. Abei seem to be quite the active little puffer with a decent amount of personality to them.

His tank is in the making right now, Im playing around with the decor. The water parameters are perfect and the tank has been cycling with no fish in it for about a month.

I have a diet pretty much picked out. Im going to hit the grocery store and buy some clams, mussels, shrimp, and crab legs to freeze and then when its time to feed I will thaw them in vitamin water. Some snails here and there, blood worms, and the occasional crab or cray with its pincher taken off to stimulate the little hunter! I also thought about "gut loading" some of the frozen stuff with crushed pellets for some more nutrition.

I cant seem to find too much more info on these little guys, so tips and tricks and advice is more than welcome to help me prepare for my new Monotrete Abei! Ill get some pics of his new home up soon.

If you are going to be feeding live food then leave the pinchers on. If you are worried your puffer might get hurt then don't feed it crabs and crays. The only reason I say this is cause people are hypocritcal and say things like " This is what it eats in the wild". Crabs and crays don't live in the wild with ripped off claws.

Your puffer will get plenty of nutrition without it. Other than this, congrats on the new puffer.

Congrats on finding a rare & beautiful species to keep! It sounds like you've been doing your homework. How are you keeping this fishless tank cycled?

My Fahaka gets crays now and then, and the first thing he does is clip off the pincers. He's never been hurt by them, though I do keep a close eye when I feed him. Also, what kind of pellets do plan to you gut load your foods with?

Congrats on finding an Abei... i'm sure your going to have fun with your little guy...

I owe it all to a fellow forum member who went out of his own way to shoot me a PM, and then go into his LFS and talk to them and put them in contact with me. Was really cool of him to do that.

As for the pellets to "gut load" with Im not quite sure I will have to do a bit more research on that.

As for my fishless tank, I have been using Prime and Stability as my chems to get it all going and running. Was recommended to me by the LFS here and worked about 2 years ago when I cycled the tank for my cichlid colony. Takes a little longer than some other ways but so far so good.

I cant wait to get this little guy in and enter the puffer world. It looks like hes gonna be tons of fun.

Stability hasn't proven itself to me that it works in cycling tanks. And what is keeping it cycled without fish to add waste (ammonia) to continue to feed the cycling bacteria? If there is no ammonia source, the bacteria dies & the tank is not cycled at all.

I don't see how you can gut-load frozen foods, although I do defrost them in liquid vitamins. I gut-load live worms with ground plankton & flakes.

My plan for the "gut loading" of the frozen stuff was to take things like the shrimp and shove the ground stuff inside. It is merely an idea that I would have to see if it even would work but I also would be defrosting in vitamin water which should more than be enough.

And your bacteria???
