Abei on the way!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Like I said I have had it running with the Stability setting it up and that worked just fine when I set my tank up awhile back for my cichlids. I also have a group of tetras in there right now that I am going to give to my little brother once the puffer comes in but I cant imagine their bioload is that big.

I also have a group of tetras in there right now
That's what I'm talking about! :)

Haha, well you gotta have something in there to move around. Cant just stair at a big empty tank for a month. I stole them from my brothers little tank and they will probably go back as soon as I see one disappear.

Their waste will help keep the nitrifying bacteria alive, although you are correct--not as much waste as a puffer, unless it's just a baby.

My Abei looks to be between 2-3 inches according to the shop he is at right now. Ill find out hopefully Thursday if hes able to ship tomorrow.

Im gettin some mixed info as to the size of these guys. I have read some people saying about 6 inches was the biggest they had seen and alot of the fish profiles say about 4. Id be happy anywhere between 4 and 6 just trying to get an idea.

I got majority of the decor set up in his tank today. Ill take a picture tomorrow once its complete. I wanted to do live plants but I decided fakes would be better incase he decides he is going to taste test or tear up anything.

Also read that some fast moving tank mates might make it, so Im gonna give the tetras a chance and hope they make it. Hopefully he wont pig out the first night while I sleep.

If you leave in the tetras, then the tank won't have the bacteria to support the puffer. Add Tetra's Safestart to your filter, when you add the puffer.

Wait Im confused now. If I leave the 10 little tetras in there my tank WILL NOT be able to support my puffer? Why is that? And whats that Safestart stuff?

Thanks for the info PufferPunk, I wanna give this little guy the best life possible.

Alright... you have some reading to do:

Ask questions...

Great reading. I understand the whole nitrates and nitrites thing, and the good bacteria and such. Also understand cycling a whole lot better now. I still cant see why my 10 little tiny tetras in my 60 gallon tank is enough to make it so my puffer cant be supported. Like I said before I planned on just putting them back in my brothers tank anyways I would just like to learn a bit about why those 10 little guys would ruin my puffers tank.

Also, info on that Tetra Safestart?

I meant only if you were planning on keeping the tetras in the puffer's tank. Then there is only enough bacteria to support the tetras, not the added puffer. Remove the tetras & there will be enough bacteria developed from the tetra's poop to support the puffer
