The pic below is of two tin foil barbs that came with a 55g tank I bought. The tank was never cleaned, water was never changed, Water was only added for evaporation. According to the seller she had these tinfoils for 6 years.

Unfortunately they both died within 4 hours of being acclimated to clean aquarium water.

Not surprising, they were probably living in water with pH of 4. I have to say that I hate working at an LFS. I think 95% of the fish I sell are dead in less than a year. I feel like I'm sending them to their doom.

thats just sad, they are so small for their age...maybe they got used to living in bad water that good water was just to much for them.

Wow that is sad. I hate it,when people abuse fish. I think the fish were like CLEAN WATER!!!!!!!!!! An then they died of Shock.

That is the classic result of nitrate poisoning. Fish can't grow in high nitrates. All of their energy is put toward their immune systems and bio-filtering organs (liver, pancreas, etc.).

When a fish goes from nasty water to clean water, their cells and systems suffer osmotic shock. The result is nearly always death. A member here did a 10% wc on a friends tank and half of the fish died within an hour.

There is a certain irony in the fact that a person poor at fish keeping kept these fish alive for 6 years in terrible conditions whilst an experienced and knowledgeable fish keeper killed these very same fish in just 4 hours!!

Makes you think doesnt it.... (or at least it made me think). I wonder which situation the fish prefered?

What really got me was how big the eyes are, it's like the eyes are normal size and the rest of the fish was very stunted. There is other fish too, A pleco and catfish of some sort, neither really show and signs of being stunted. Also a giant danio and a silver dollar both of these look similar to the tin foils but are still alive.
