The extra O2 just helps up cellular resparation thus upping the metabolism of the BB which means they can consume NH3 faster, as well as reproduce faster. The substrate pro just gives a much larger surface area in a smaller package than bio balls or scrubbies which is great for canisters or in this case HOB's where your working with limited space. As far as the AC having space for 5x the ammount of substrate thats super but its way overkill. I say this because BB is grown in direct perportion to the ammount of waste (food for bb) in the tank, not how much media you have. So unless you have some absurd stock like 15 adult oscars in a 75, the extra media in an AC is just that, extra.
I agree with the overkill. Thats how most people like their filtration though. More than needed is better than not enough. I use both with great success. I just really think if you have the extra cash get the ac110. Then if i had 20$ more i would buy an xp3 instead. I think its a matter of cash in hand ATM. I think most would buy an ac110 if they had the 80$ dedicated to a filter. There is no doubt in my mind that ac110 can handle more gallons for filtration. Though not everyone needs that. A emp 400 does a great job the gallons its suppose to filter. Both are great filters that are recomened for different tank sizes. I use both with success. My emp is always dirtier , but the ac110 tanks parms are always better. End O Story
