acting stupid at lfs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i never have tried to od such a thing
i will try and help out if i find that i can else i always finish what i was doing there at the shop and move out
i never try and correct the lfs peeps when they are making a sale, as here there aren't any places like wall mart or any such big enterprises, only mommy and papa stores and i am not going to be one such fellow who is going to be spoiling someones business, i may have a private talk with the lfs guy later and tell him what he said was wrong, but never spoil a sale, thus i am always welcome at the store, and sometimes i am asked for any thing they are confused with and i always have MFK to ask if i don't know sumthing

but trying to be a smart ***, no i never have pulled that stunt

If you want better knowledge of fish from a fish store, your going to be paying alot more then what the prices are now. I manage a store and I know my ****. But there really isnt anyone as qualified as me that wants to scrub algae and do water changes for 8 bucks and hour. I get the type of person that is a "know it all" everyonce and awhile but usually it is just some dumb kid that read a few post on a online fish forum and wants to think he know more them me. So just lay off the high school kid thats working a summer job and get you own knowledge about what pets you want. If you want to know what a employe knows about fish, just ask. There is no need to play games. If the employee is lieing you can usually pick that up in about 2-3 sentences and go from there.

Nah, never had a problem. I just think people expect a bit too much of the average LFS/chain store employee. They're mostly part timers, not well paid...if they're not fishkeepers themselves you can't expect them to know everything, and it's kind of pointless to ask.

Not picking at you at all nitro, just talking generalities.

Exactly the point I was trying to make in my earlier post mate :nilly:, People just need to :chillpill: and take some responsibility for theirselfs:D.

I can see why people would 'test' the employees at an LFS and I have done some of that myself but I don't get why anyone would act like an a-hole in an LFS, especially one that is a non-chain one. Maybe it's part of growing up but eventually you'll realize that you won't gain anything by making people feel stupid; most won't say "wow, that guy really knows his stuff and I am an oaf that doesn't deserve working with living things, I should go and study all of Dr.Axelrod's works..." Most will resent your presence and make your experience unpleasant. Take pride in knowing that by even being a member of this site and knowing of this and other similar resources you already have at your fingertips more knowledge than any average LFS employee, and be happy ;)

My 2c.

I'm not surprised some random high school and college kid working at petsmart/pet supermarket/ petco doesn't know all their stuff about fish, being that it is a large pet store, but I do ask basic questions to try to gauge the knowledge of employees at particular fish stores that have good reputations but hire a bunch of morons who don't know or care about fish.

How does belonging to an online forum make you an expert, or even knowledgable, about any subject. If everyone who is a member were such fonts of knowledge we would not have the same basic questions asked over and over. Actually, if this were the case this forum would cease to exist as is. It would simply become a chat room and photo gallery. So get off your high horse, and that means all of you who go into a place of business and act like a child, and maybe discover that the lowly LFS emplyee has more knowledge than you do. At the least try to share that knowledge for everyone's benefit. Done correctly, this will have a more lasting impression on the hobby than your personal satisfaction at lording it over someone who possibly is new. Here's your 2 cents back, you need it more than I do.

I work in a LFS and stupid questions get stupid answers....I have my arm in a tank cleaning or I'm walking around with a net. People ask do you work here?...Nope I always Bring my own net to pet stores.
Can't I keep piranha with my oscars?...Sure do whatever you want it's your tank and your money.

Or maybe you should carefully re-read what I said and what you yourself highlighted in red:

"Take pride in knowing that by even being a member of this site and knowing of this and other similar resourcesyou already have at your fingertips more knowledge than any average LFS employee, and be happy"

What I meant to say was in defense of LFS employees. By garnering the knowledge and the man-decades of experience in the aquarium hobby from many knowledgable people on this forum, we will already possess MORE information than any single person may carry with them...

So, my point, again, was to stop expecting that some random kid working in a store will know everything that we may know or may be able to find out by browsing MFK and reading about people's experiences.

Now here's $2 to buy yourself some reading glasses. :p

i havent acted stupid but i have corrected lfs employees, i once went to a store and they had a young giant gouramie in a ten gallon labled as a pink gouramie:screwy: i told them how big it would get and the guys response was: "yeah i know i was going to change the sign" i doubt he ever did though:(
