Seems there are alot of people who responded to this thread that don't need to "act"

I guess it's up to them to figure out if they feel offended or not.

Personally the LFS is the last place I would look to find info. Not that the employees aren't knowledgable, it just I wan't to be informed before I buy.
Yeah, I've never gone into a fish store looking for information, but when I'm on the job, and people do come in to ask questions, I try to make it worth the trip. Some other people I work with or have seen at other stores on the other hand....well, I can't say the same about them

I have asked a question to a young employee at a LFS I knew the answer too regarding compatability. I was buying both fish anyways but for seperate tanks. they told me there would be no problem and that the fish will not outgrow any tank as they only grow to the tank. I tried to correct him on the growth part but he just got mad. when I got to the counter another employee questioned me on the fish and said they where incompatible. he also pointed out that the arowana needed to be in a 100G tank min. and a 250 would be better. the first employee was well within earshot and had a sheapish look on there face. I would rather go in and pass on information I do know and also learn from some of the people in the hobby as to tricks I may not have known. I have tried to help other people oout when they are going in for fish and are just setting up there new tank for there 8 yr old child. yes neons look nice but their not hardy and there are better choices with better longterm enjoyment. use the knowledge you have regardless of how much you know share it but don't try to give info on what you don't know

Worked at "World of Water" Blackpool England for a while but since we sold both pets and outdoor water features fountains ect as well as Saltwater Coldwater Tropic fish. Only a few of the staff had good knowledge but i believe if one of the staff didnt know for CERTAIN he/she would always go ask one of the staff wth more knowledge, Wasnt productive but the longer newbies worked there the more they learned.

I always think its most wise to do reaseach yourself before you venture out to the shop and pick random fish that look nice

I choose a store because of the quality and care of the fish, not the knowledge of "this or that" by the employees. Yes, I do expect a couple of employees to know a bit more than just the basics, such as species specific info in such, but I don't expect there to always be one of those working the shift that I show up at. If you know what you want, go to the store and get it. If you don't know what you want or don't get a satisfactory answer to a question, look it up!!! You can always go back to the store, most stores will even put a creature on hold for a bit for you to get more accurate info first. Don't depend on somebody that works their to know everything you know or want to know. I don't ask the guys at the supermarket how to cook my steak!! Whenever I buy a car, I don't expect the salesman to show me how to program the radio!
I worked at a Petco for a bit as the aquatics specialsit and considered it my job to educate the uneducated! (now I'm a science teacher). I loved it!! Yes, people asked stupid questions, but given them stupid anwers is a way to a)loose business, b)loose livestock, c)loose your job, d) get your butt kicked. No winner there! When people tried to convince me that there "special situation" will work, "I swear, my cousin keeps 3 oscars in a 20 and it works just fine." I just refused to sell them fish. Yes I lost a little business that way, but kept the fish alive and made the business up and then some from people who appreciated my honesty and respected my knowledge.
For those of you who are jerks that work at fish shops, hope you have a backup plan.
For those of you who are jerks and shop at fish shops, order your fish online and give those 18 year old algea scrubbers a break.

I have a LFS that is actually ran by a single guy.
He actually has a couple of the fish as pets (a fugu puffer)
He has lotsa knowledge. And Piranha :Þ

Perhaps keep the $2 bucks for some lessons yourself. Saying that being on this forum makes you more knowledgable than someone else is not in defense of said person. Maybe use those glasses yourself and learn some of that knowledge that you so highly tout instead of being on here trying to make yourself feel important.
He just said more knowledge at your fingertips. Nobody thinks that simply being on this forum makes you an expert...

I have done this a couple of times, this one guy told me a TSN needs an 80G tank. I talked to another employee who informed me that they get really big and need a much larger tank. I get the feeling sometimes that people judge others' knowledge by their gender or age.

i think that might have been part of my problem with some of the posters on here.

that point can definitely be seen on other threads as well. especially based off what people reply with for answers. ive seen some veterans point fingers instead of ask questions and discussing
