NOM NOM NOM. What you are referring to is target training, something that monitors and tegus take very well to. A method I like a little more is to use a ball on a stick, and a good color is purple, as it is not as common of a color, and fewer things will set them off. Something that I like a little more is a contrasting purple and white ball, which provides a unique target. It is a great idea for monitors and tegus, and can be used for a variety of things, from decreasing food aggression to getting them exercise. I can give you the basics on how to target train them if you'd like.

Absolutely, that would be wonderful!

First, he needs to be feeding off of tongs, if he isn't already.

Step one, get a piece of cardstock and color it to what you want the target's color to be. I recommend a checkered purple and white. When feeding, hold this behind the food item so he associates the color with food. Every time he takes the food, use a trigger word, such as the word "target".

Step two, after a few feedings like this (Babies take to it much faster, as they haven't had a lot of time to become accustomed to a different feeding method like adults have. I'd say about three days for yours, give or take.) Take the ball you will be using as a target, you want something about the size of a tennis ball, colored to whatever you've chosen, and hold it in front of a blank piece of cardstock. Say the trigger word, "target" and if all goes well he should nose the ball or bite it. If he does, give him his food. If he doesn't, say the trigger word a few more times. If he still doesn't, take the food and hold it against the ball. Say target, and get him to take the food. Once he does, try again without the food against the ball. Repeat until he noses or bites the ball without food.

Step three, after a week or so, try to get him to have to come after the target, instead of holding it right in front of him. Try and lure him out of the cage to get the target. Once he is consistently doing this, you have a well trained monitor.

The key is be consistent, always use the target while feeding, and don't use it to move him from A to B and then withhold food. Reward him every time he hits the target.

The sound of that crayfish was satisfying, but I'd never want to get my fingers close to his food. He looks very happy! Any luck with the lubers yet?

Oh yes, don't need fingers to sound like that crayfish, lol. No luck with lubbers yet, the store I was going to visit (since they have a huge selection of oddball feeders) turned out to have closed down for renovations. So, I'll have to wait on that... if there's any at the Hamburg, PA show I'll pick them up to give it a shot. I'd love to see him chase those around, it's a good meal and good exercise!

How big is the Hamburg show? When I can, I catch wild grasshoppers and purge feed them to feed to my gecko. It's so much fun watching him chase one down. He can make a mess though.

Small venue, but generally lots of vendors packed in. During the winter there's usually less because some of them won't move/sell/etc stock in the colder months. I'd try grasshoppers for my geckos, but I've never seen any around here actually. Cicadas, honey bees, carpenter bees, stink bugs, longhorn beetles, a f*ck ton of lady bugs... but no grasshoppers. I hadn't really thought about that until now, but that's kind of weird. I know I won't find lubbers, but now I'm wondering why I haven't seen lil' grasshoppers. >_<

I had Albert out for some exercise/free-roam time today. I think I should take the following as threats, heh...

Albert climbed up onto the chair next to me and stared at me for a good 5 minutes. Never moving, just staring and occasionally flicking his tongue at me.

He then started rummaging through some laundry that was on the chair until he found a shirt that was mine, and then he tried to eat. Several times. -_-

Such joys, aren't they? LOL This is why I laugh at people who say "Well he wouldn't eat it if it was bad for him.."

Oh, definitely, lol. And ha! People have obviously never been to a vet's office or around a three year old child, otherwise they'd hear plenty of stories of "OMG, I can't believe he ate *insert random object here*" stories. Which would throw out the "Well, he wouldn't eat it if it was bad for him..." right out the window. That was a similar reason I stopped listening to a few "experts" when I was doing research for my tegu and it came to diet. "Well, the tegu will let you know what it wants to eat. It knows what's good for it." ...really? -_-

But anyway, random question. How good is the eyesight of a Savannah? My husband thought Albert's interest in that particular shirt (aside from maybe a smell on it) was that it was a shiny material that had CZ/Rhinestone pieces on it. And that the shine/sparkle intrigued him. I know personally that's usually what gets my attention "Ooo, honey, look shiney things in the jewelry store! Let's go look!" :P
