advice needed for 600 gallon beginner

dude keep them there , the more the better. But could you post some pics? Just make sure there is some kind of prefilter so your bioballs dont get all gunky. They are a pain in the --- to clean. Put some filter floss or sponge over the bio balls just like you would on your drip tray
 
im assuming foam or scrubbies would be the way to go for a mechanical filtration in this type of scenario. anything in particular you can suggest that would fit this situation the best? and i really don't have any good pics of the tank because it is a) wrapped in plastic and blankets from protection. and b) in a storage unit right now with all my stuff because im in escrow and staying with a frien till i close. i can try and dig it out today and get some shots. did you want to see just to see. or is there something specific i should get a shot of that would help decide what to do in these kind of scenarios?

Well a pic would help describe what to do with the HOB wetdry filter you said you had. And no pot scubbies are not a pre filter. They are you filter. You want the water to go through a filter pad first before it hits bioballs or pot scrubbies. You can get it at the lfs its like dirt cheap. Just ask for pre filter or filter pad in a long roll. That will keep big peices of crap attaching to your scrubbies and bio balls. Once the scrubbies / bioballs get dirty its a *%$#$ to clean them. Because you have to clean them with tank water so you dont kill your good bacteria.
 
ok, ill try and dig it out of storage enough to get shots inside and out. as for the wetdry i don't have one yet. i have sheets of 1/8" acrylic to use for dividers. i have a 30 to 125 gallon tanks lined up to use to build one.

.... i would keep them , the more bio the better .... also when cleaning your bio balls in your sump you could replace them with these , or vice versa. I would keep them in there for sure. If you remove the bio balls and bio bale you will have one hell of a waterfall going on. I wouldnt want to listen to that.

- add bio media to keep tank cleaner
-quiet the massive waterfall you would have
-help cleaning and switching bio balls from sump to tank if you need to do so.

i see all pros and no negatives..
 
so is a wet dry stil the way to go? or would the bio balls in the overflows eliminate the need for a wet dry? and any suggestions as to how to set up the sump would be helpful wether it be wet dry or refugium style as im getting pretty lost with this part.
 
Yes you would need an additonal sump / wetdry. It will benifit you because its a home for your protien skimmer and injured fish. Here check out these for help with making a sump.

i would say you need atleast 400 scrubbies in your sump. I would go more if possible. You can fit a good 300 or so in a 55 diy from what i understand. So a 75 gallon sump or larger is what your looking at.

I would also toss an fx5 on that hoe.
