African Tiger Fish or Wolf fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Props for having the cahones to put an aimara in that situation haha.

Your welcome OP, this guy is only the 3rd or 4th guy I've seen with aimara in a community. Its deff possible, idk if I'd want to risk my other fish though lol

Has nothing to do with Cahones.....

Look back at the history of expensive monsters. ALL are thought to be lone fish that will kill anything in the tank. Tigers were that way, I've heard that about Dorado, people thought that about Armatus. Price drops and poof! They're in communities.

IF I didn't trust my Aimara I wouldn't have it housed with the rays I do. The Falkneri that are kept with the Aimara are to my knowledge 3 out of the only 5 in the country we know of that aren't in Dr Ross's tanks. There's a bunch of nice rays in there with the Aimara, and like I said not one incident in like 2+ years. My inspiration was seeing one housed with Boesemani. I thought if someone out there is willing to trust one with such rare sought after rays it must be possible.

People frown on MBU with rays, and people also doubt groups of Morays living in harmony too. Doesn't mean it can't be done. ;)

Do you have any pics of your setup anywhere? I would love to see that!! It does sound like a natural setup you have there, I would imagine your aimara is WC and probably was living with rays where he came from. I would have a heart attack if aimara price dropped to the point of it being affordable for me.

I've never kept one but just based on what most (keyword most) people say on here its a dangerous thing, your obviously a specialist and know how to integrate them into community, so yes, its not cahones just smarts about tankmates

@ Chicxulub

It certainly does seem like everything is cyclical on most forums that I have been on, there is always an IT fish.

This one's pretty old..... Been a while since I've updated anything but the grow outs.

Mine doesn't exactly live up to the typical stereo type of Aimara..... ;)

Sometimes I just wanna reach in there and try to scratch his belly....

I move rays around quite a bit to give the females breaks and it's really weird how the wolf will sometimes get in front of the rays and try to fend off the net, the same way a guard dog would.

I took advice from people over sees in regards to building him a "nest" out of driftwood. A place for him to retreat to. They claim this is an absolute must if trying to cohab them with other fish. The catfish seem to hang out there all the time and the wolf doesn't seem to mind at all, and even accepts the knife hanging out in there most of the time.

I figured this fish would become more aggressive with age, but it seems just the opposite. He hasn't bit a siphon or algae scraper in a long time and during maintenance he just retreats to his "nest" anymore.....

Next step will likely be adding the Masheer, Brassy Dorado, and Odoe once they get a lil bigger..... Curious if he'll get frisky with 14 new fish in there... :naughty:

you will have to record the introduction of the Masheer, Dorado, and the Odoe, there are few times that are more exciting/stressful as when you put new fish in a tank and see how they interact with each other!

Going to need to free up some grow out tanks as the Tiger pack just seems to keep growing, which is the driving force behind this move that's approaching.

I'm sure the Odoe won't be a big deal, they're always in a top corner. The Masheer will be interesting cause they frequent the bottom and they're non stop swift swimmers sure to gain the attention of everyone in the tank. My main concern will be trying to mix the 2 species of Dorado. I have 2 Franky Dorados and they tear each other up in a matter of hours. Robert (the brassy Dorado) is one of my favorite fish so it's bound to be a very tense ordeal. I'm hoping the sheer number of newcomers will be enough to spread the aggression out to a manageable level.

I'm hoping to have some cameras set up and streaming by the time this move happens just so we can monitor what's going on while at work. IF anything was to happen to Robert I'm not sure I'd ever be able to find another.

that is one of the best fish names ever btw (Robert). It would be cool to stream the intro of the fish. I would get the camera on a tripod in case you have to intervene!

Al, you really should start a dedicated growout thread for Mr. Paulson.
