I like CA/SA cichlids because of how they interact with me and each other, they seem to be more intellectual then africans. I say this because my expireance with them has shown me that they knew it was MY hand that fed, not some stranger walking up to view them, and i like how they are almost trainable... Africans look awesome though, especially a tank full of peacocks or mbuna's they are so active and visually pleasing. I love all fish, but i have to go with Americans.

My africans are actually more friendlier than my 2 CA, Jack and Red Devil. When its feeding time I can touch and pet most of them in the water. They really know the hand that feeds them. My Jack will also eat out of my hand but my red devil seems to be the shyest out of the group.

Lucky you. My Jack D hides when I come near. I guess I sorta have that effect hehe. However my Oscar thinks I'm his best friend, I take care of his munchies by-hand, so we're cool.

I prefer Africans. Most the time I see SA, New World Cichlids I see a big fish and may have personality but I get bored easy. When I see African Large Tanks with colorful Peacocks, Frontosa, Mbuna and Haps.. I see the huge variety of colors..and depending on background and tank setup.. I think of them as the closest you can get to a Salt Water tank for looks and beauty.

Both "Regions" have a lot to offer. Generally africans that are readily available are of the Mbuna type from lake Malawi, but there are fish from lake Tanganyika that get up to 60" long.

However, many American species readily found are relatively large and fun to keep.

I prefer Africans, but there is so much variety in both types. There is truly something for everyone.

Americans. I kept Africans for 18 years. You really need to find good sources for fish. The ease at which they breed fills LFS with hybrids and inbred washed out colors. I work in a store when they bought 40!!!!!!! 2 inch hap ahlis in FULL MALE DRESS. Can you say hormones? Dont get me wrong, from good sources especially reliable breeders Africans are great but do we need a hybrid peacock of the week? Do we need frontosa with 5 stripes on 1 side and 6 on the other? Buy from serious breeders here!!!
