Every night I watch my beautiful cichlids for hours at a time until my wife gets mad:D. I have a RD/Midas, Buttikoferi, Flowerhorn and a Purple Rose Queen. This is a clash of personalities which makes for an interesting show. All of these fish are tough and most would say aggressive but have we ever said why? What makes them so damn aggressive and tough?

This leads me to my little 1 ½ RD/Midas which has lived up his/her name!! This little fish has completely taking over the 75 gallon tank in just two days. I started to ask myself, how is it with all of these aggressive fish can he/she do this? I understand even a RD/Midas can be calm and non-aggressive but this is not the case with my fish or with my experience with this RD/Midas cichlids. The answer that I came up with is STAMINA.

It is not the Teeth, Size, jaw strength but the willingness and dedication to win and take over that pushes these fish to be monsters. The RD/Midas can battle all night! Whereas the Purple Rose Queen had a few moments of being the dominate fish until it could not keep up that exhausting pace, no longer an aggressive fish. Once this happens, you see a mad dash to get away! However with little room there is no escape. This is when the fish just gives up and becomes helpless. With being stressed out, no protection and an opponent that refuses to give up, the fish is doomed and eventually gets killed. Please note that we are still taking about an aggressive cichlid but what changes is the lack of “Gameness” within the fish.

I understand that having big teeth, great jaw strength and other things play a role in a dispute over territory and breeding. However when you see two equally sized and equally aggressive cichlids going at it, it comes down to which one wants it more! Who has the stamina to outlast its opponent and claim victory!

So, when people ask who is the most aggressive cichlid that really doesn’t answer the question. Please, do not get me wrong I understand what aggressive means I just don’t think people mean it the way it is. People view this as who can kick who’s butt in a fight. I can say the same for dogs. My little Beagle is aggressive when we tried taking his food away :irked: but can you compare that to a pittbull? You can place a Rottweiler who is big, strong, great jaw strength, aggressive and tough to a pit but the outcome is always the same. The Rottweiler will beat the pit for a few minutes until he gets tried. The Pit then takes over and beats up the Rott.

This is the same for cichlids.

Sorry for the long post, just putting it out there to create a discussion.

Thanks,

sometimes it is just that 1 fish is more hevaly built than a other spises of fish and sometimes it is that 1 fish is more determened

I have had small fish take on much larger ones. Nothing about STAMINA, all about ATTITUDE. IF the fish thinks its BIG it will act it.

Agree. None of my bigger fish even think about messing with my Festae. She never instigates, but never backs down either, and never gives an inch. My Midas could shred her to pieces based on size, but she's already won the non physical part of the confrontation. Attitude goes far....

Convicts are the same way. Thank god they don't get 16-18". Could you imagine?

I'm sorry but if EVERY cichlid can grow to that size, a mbuna would definitely be the most psycho and powerful. Auratus, Kenyi, Demasoni, and Johanni. These guys are all bad bruisers but they are african.

If this was CA/SA cichlid wise, I would have to say if a salvini grew to 18'', there will be nothing but :nilly:.

lol yeah could you imagine a 12" mbuna setup..........wow.

lol a breeding pair of 12" neets (Neetroplus nematopus) would own every fish that has been mentioned in this thread and then some.

I concur that aggression is used wrong a lot. Aggression is all attitude and nothing to do with the destruction that may be handed out. My biggest peeve is when people confuse predation with aggression.
