Before you sell or trade the sub dom. male you seperated you might want to pull out the aggressive male from his females and drop in the sub to see if the females accept him and if he colors up nice for the females. I had one of my peacocks pulled out in a 30 gallon once and he was drab for a month, when i dropped it in the main tank 2 days later he colored up nice to attract the females but he was not as accepted as the dominant one. OFten a less aggressive fish will become aggressive when the dominant fish is removed and start beating up fish like the dom. fish did so you might want to test both of them with the females for a week or so to be 100 percent.

haha should have read further on! thats obviously exactly what I am going to do now.

You add females to species only they can crossbreed. An all male tank with show color just fine. So do speices only or all male...

So if I was going to do that what should I be looking? I have got two ruby red males and 2 ruby red females for sure. Should I take everything else out and just try and find more females? Or would I want 1 red male and 3-4 females?

If I was to do something like that what is a fish of another color that I could get and they would not cross breed? I think that would be an interesting tank. 1 Rudy Red male and his females and 1 something really colorful, maybe blue and some females for him. Suggestions for that? Or do you think an all male peacock tank would look better? I think I am liking the other idea better...I want something with beautiful fish but I want it kinda simple right now. 2-3 different colors in the tank, not something with 8 different colors. So what are some possibilities for an african fish that would be a different color than the Ruby's but about the same size and aggression level.

I am planning to get a 90 at the end of this month, I am looking right now so I am trying to plan my final stock list for that.

I do not mix females with other types. It just asks for trouble. Africans will breed if they can, does not matter on color. If you want females do a species tank 1m-3/4 f. Or all males....

Is there anything I could mix in there with some red rubys that they would not crossbreed with? Would I have to go outside of the african realm? If I was to do all males can you mix in more than one male of the same color? Like could I do two ruby red, two red shoulder and two of something else?

Sure you can do it, but you will have better color if it is one male each... why do you want multiple males in there the same?

Only reason I thought of that is it would allow me to have a tank with like 3 colors instead of like 8 males all different colors. Could I do a blue and red fish of another species? So I could just keep it kinda simple, blue, red and something else. Versus having a tank full of different male peacocks, which would be like 6 or 7 different colors. Does that make sense?

Like right now in my tank I have a Blue fish a Red fish and their females which are all pretty much silver to a dark brown grey color. I have two yellow labs which are just waiting for a new home. But you see what I am saying? 1 real bright blue, 1 real bright red and then the females to kinda fill the space, I was trying to find a 3rd color that I could mix in permanatly.

There are only really a few color to have: red, blue, yellow... Just different patterns...

Having mixed males and females is only an issue if I want to sell off the fry as pure right? I could just use them as feeders right? I just like the way it looks right now, I understand what you are saying though. If I was to stay with what I got and not raise the fry for reselling as pure, what is the proper number of females for two males? Or how many females should I have per male? I will be getting the 90 like I made mention of, so how many can fit in there comfortably? Eventually I do plan to make it right with species matched males and females, but that wont be for a little while until I move and can set up two tanks and have one for the Red Shoulder and one for the Ruby Red because I couldnt pick between one or the other right now, I want both haha and I just like the feel of the tank with the females and matting, it is fun having the babies and raising them, even if it is just for feeders!

dont mix the females, you will never be able to tell them apart...

Yeah after I read that I started thinking and there is def no way. I guess the more I think about it I am leaning towards an all male tank and maybe keep a a smaller tank or two to keep the females in. So then I could have a breeding pair in the small tank, to breed. I am guessing that's what most people do? if you breed them. Then you can breed selectively. Would it be possible to keep a female or two in a 10g? Probably not a good size if I want to breed them with the male right...would have to go bigger? 20g maybe? If I was to do that how many females would I want for a male? would 1 be enough or do I need a harem of 3? I am liking this idea even more now...good excuse to bump up my 10g to something a little bigger haha
