so why add a bubbler to bait buckets?
water movement sure isn't whats keeping 2 dozen fish alive in a bucket.

The bubbles don't add o2 into the water. Its the bubbles creating an upward current and breaking the surface tension the does the trick.

In other words the surface movement is in fact helping keep the fish alive.

I have had the best experience with whisper. I have a whisper 60 on my 30g and 190g. SUPER QUIET

TETRA TEC DEEP WATER with a 5" disk ...I use it in my W/D under the bio balls, maybe a little over kill however it works for me.... I also use a Hydor turbo 4 in my other w/d.. I'm looking for maximum gas exchange in my w/d's..

Not directly but through the gas exchange process at the surface of the water. here's a quote from Wikepedia:

"Oxygen exchange at the surface is an important constraint, and thus the surface area of the aquarium. Some aquarists go so far as to say that a deeper aquarium with more volume holds no more fish than a shallower aquarium of the same surface area. The capacity can be improved by surface movement and water circulation such as through aeration, which not only improves oxygen exchange"

Power heads will work just as well as air pumps with stones as long as the tension at the top of the aquarium is broken.

thats all they provide if i remember right oxygen is not like co2 it can not be defused into water easily so water movement is all that adds oxygen same reason rivers have so much oxygen with all the surface movement .

a lot of people do not trust airstones as you dont see a large splashing like in a water pump but an airstone adds low speed high volume movement and is proven technologies

Just bought a Rena 300 for my sponge filter - noisy as hell - will be returning. I've had a Penn Plax X4 for years and it's much quieter. Besides the 8500 Precision I've read about - anyone else have a quiet pump -(needed for 75g)? The Rena 300 said "Extremely Quiet".....yeah...not quite...
