Youre right man...those fish down in florida that were taken from their natural homes and are now frozen..ooops I mean thawed out and dead...ya they doin much better than the ones I have. You see reports of thousands of dead fish..fish who would not be in this country and frozen had they been left alone. So, no, all fish in these man made vats or ponds are not better off than my F5000s at home.

You really think the ponds have 100% fresh water at least once a day? Impressive
Your opinion as a hobbyist is very favorable of vendors. Odd
You are a hobbyist but you think that these captive fish in ponds live better than any you or me or anyone here has? Interesting

I want to point out my own sig. I am looking for wild caught fish. I have been breeding salvinis for about 5 years now and can't get anything that looks like the ones collected from the tabasca lagoons and belize. In these locations the fish have a very srtong red in them I want to breed very strong red colored salvinis and every time I get a real nice red out of an offspring it is only in that one perticular fish.and dosent carry on to the offspring. I would like to get a pair or two from these places and see if I can't reproduce this in my fish so I can share my personal love for this spcs. In its intierty with others. As I said there are great arguments for and against this. A very good topic.

By the way anyone know how to get set up on a collection trip because so far no leads on my search for the salvinis and I would love to see them in there natural habitat and collect for myself. Man what a dream come true. But that is all it seems just a dream it seems there are loads of hoops to jump throught in order to do that and taking care of the 7 tanks I have is enough work in itself. But I would be more then willing to pay a fishkeeper friend to do my maintence so I could.

fish_n_vw: Ken Davis (FishFarm) could hook you up on a collecting trip.

I understand where you're coming from with the salvini. That's one of those species that have become bland from overbreeding and mixing of races. If you ever get a clean new bloodline let me know!

By the I will add marketing scheme or not it is nice for those of us who are very dedicated to one perticular species to have wild caught available. I have 260 gallons for just salvinis and that's three tanks I keep others but love my salvinis. I just wish someone would tell me how to get some w/c salvinis.

The whole world will know if I get a clean line you will be able to hear me from the other side of the country.

Are you telling me that you have NEVER had a fish die in your tanks? I can assure you that I have in my home. Do you know how many wild native fish died in Florida because of the cold? I am not on here to smear anyone, including you, my intention is to inform you. Your comment about the puppy mills is a direct attack on the industry that provides 45% of all of the tropical fish in USA, your fish included. . . If you really feel this way, how can you keep fish in tanks?

Go to florida and check out a farm. . .man. You really have no idea how this all works. The farmed fish are really well taken care of, the farmer's livelyhood if you will.

I appoligize if I have offended anyone by giving honest facts, this is my hobby first, business end is way down the list.

BigPic - I heard ya loud and clear in the other thread and your statement about F0 meaning the parents and F1 the offspring and so no that got my wheels turning about the grading system. One could go on a collection trip and get perhaps 10 cichlids of the same species - who's to say you didn't just collect a few from the exact same bloodline -F0 mother,F1 daughter, F2 grandson, and so on. Then bring these same fish back to the US or where ever and breed the F2 with the F1 and F0. If this system is in place to track generations out of the wild then the F0 would be the collected W/C fish. On the other hand if the system tracks just the parental offspring of any pairing of cichlids w/c, multi-generational, or the incestrial pairing of adult brother/sister fry then the F0 value would be all but meaningless.

I agree, from my understanding of the F# classification, F0 means wild fish from their native habitat.
