Copyright to Frank (Itaituba2003).. he is the owner of the mega-tank :D

Its not Franks tank. ;)

But i dont know about the albino thing. Its easy to get albino catfish from peru. And they are hunters. Also, you cant see **** in the brown water anyway. So colour dosent really matter much in some parts of the Amazon.
So far, i only know of 2 white rays in captivity. So they really are rare fish. No wonder we dont see any WC. But they will find one at some point.
I just think they are rare.

First time I've seen anything like it! Very rare indeed!

wow all i can say,
Was collecting in the Peru a few weeks ago. The water is muddy and the Black river well is black so not much light penetrates it. Rays stay near the bottom also. We did catch some near the shore early am with little sun. So in the am or late pm they may feed in shallow water.

Albino Rays in the wild probably don't survive past a few weeks.. they are vulnerable targets for predations lacking the camoflauge.. and I believe they would get some sort of 'sunburn' or something from the lack of pigment issue.. I have a theory that potamotrygon will 'bask' in order to increase their body temp and metabolism, allowing for better digestion.. if this is the case, an albino ray for sure would die in the wild..

As far as breeding them out in captivity.. as we know birthing capacity is fairly low so it lowers the chances right there, and gestation period is very long.. so is growing out to adulthood. Only captive bred albinos would likely live, unless they were caught and exported at a very young age.. (ie: Frank's White Leopoldi)

So far, this is only the 2nd Albino ray I have ever come across..

as for basking Miles i did see lot's of Leo's in the shallows where the water is very warm.

i ment more albino's from captive breeding.

Albino's arn't pretty, irrespective of what speices of fish we talk about. Albino rays look's like vomit.

While I would not be quite so crass and extreme I have to echo these sentiments. I don't understand the fascination with albinism. Saying they look like vomit is a bit over the top but they certainly are bland. They may be rare. They me extremely difficult to find. They may even be somewhat interesting but I have to draw the line at beautiful. We've taken a gorgeous fish and essentially erased the clolors that make them beautiful and then say it's an improvement. It's akin to taking a Van Gogh

placing it in direct sunlight where U.V. fades the paint colors

and then saying it's an improvement over the original. I just don't get it.
