Algae Destroyer Killed My Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used it like 6 months ago, proper dose and everything. Within 2 hours my stingray was barely breathing I did a major water change but it was too late!:OMG: I was so upset b/c it was my first ray. I have never had a problem with any other chemicals until then. I know how bad it sucks and I truely feel your pain. Sorry dude, I feel for you

This stuff killed several convicts, another unidentified cichlid, and sadly,my blood parrot cichlid.I have used it twice, and both times I lost fish. The first time I accidentily used too much of it,and so I thought it was my fault that the fish died. This time I used the correct dosage, and the fish actually died faster.

Ok bro.. let's examine the situation.

You need Algae Fix, because you have Algae.
You have Algae, because you have high Nitrates.
You have high Nitrates, because you don't change the water enough.

I see an Oscar in your avatar, and you state it killed 'several' convicts, a blood parrot and an 'unidentified' cichlid. This leads me to believe that, unless you have multiple tanks, you have a cichlid community tank that is likely over-stocked.

The fact that the other cichlid is 'un-identified' means that you might not do as much research as needed for you to be succesful at what your trying to accomplish.

Now, if you had an algae problem I am sure you could have gotten advice from multiple sources, but instead tried to take a quick and simple way out. (hence the lack of research).. If you would have inquired about these products before using them, you could have been forwarned of the problems with them.

Using Algacides often kill off your bio-filter, disallowing it to break down Ammonia.

Using Algacides often kill off a large amount of algae, creating a spike in Ammonia

You already had poor water quality, probably worse than you knew. Although algae will consume nitrates that are accumulating from not changing water, your Dissolved Organic Compounds (DOCs) would build-up and those don't register on testing kits. Combine high Nitrates, DOCs, an Ammonia Spike with a weak Bio-Filter, and an over-crowded cichlid tank.. and guess what you get?

You admitted that you have over-dosed in the past, which means you might have a hard time following direction. Direction, such as the advice that some might try to give you, like change water more often and manually remove algae. Advice like this will allow for your fish to be healthier and live longer, and also dismiss accusations of fish-safe chemicals that weren't used properly.

So..

Before you blame the Chemical..

You might consider..

It was your own fault? :shakehead

PS. If you use an algacide for rays, you need to not have rays.

First of all I have very good water parameters.I do weekly or even bi-weekly water changes. The tank is not overcrowded.I have multiple tanks, and know how to take care of them. This one particular tank just turns green on me.It is probably from to much sunlight.I have never heard of anything like this happening before,or I wouldn't have used the junk. The unidentified cichlid came from Walmart in the mixed cichlid tank, and was Before you give advice you might want to ask a few questions, instead of just assuming you know everything.

By not providing that info from the beginning, you're forcing the respondents to make recommendations without all the facts. And saying the parameters are good and publishing the results are 2 different things. So is stating water changes are done without providing the amount accomplished weekly (10-20% changes are a waste of time - if such is the case)
So, don't berate respondents for their responses if they weren't provided all the facts from the beginning. You're the one wanting advise/answers. Why must the respondents have to do the extra digging to get the full story 2 pages into the thread?

So lets see Miles...I supose you are the perfect fish keeper and have never made a mistake in your life? I made a mistake by using the product and now I have learned from it. But I would like to know where you get off telling me I shouldn't even have rays? Everyone makes mistakes and learns from them, next time you should think about the things you say. Giving advise is one thing but being just downright mean and making someone else feel stupid is uncalled for. I am sure you are far more knowledgeable than I am but to get there didn't you make mistakes????????

this is what happens in a lot of threads! if you read in to a lot of them their is a lot of people yelling at others saying how dumb they were to do that or have never done this! for example there is a thread about a guy that doesnt do many w/c and when they are done they are done by his father! but there were quite a few people saying how unbelievable it was they didnt kno how to do water changes! only 2 that didnt make fun of him! and only one that stood up for him!

but to defend miles he was giving a great deal of info! but probably could have said it in a less dimeaning way of yourself!

but such is fishkeeping i guess! unfortunately!

just remember learn fomr mistakes! and try not to make the same mistake! and if you do try not 3 times!:D

So I can admit that I was wrong, because of lack of information.

However..

Just as I improperly accused you of having poor husbandry practices,

You improperly accused the chemical for killing your fish.

I believe fish keepers should have the right to the truth before you start point fingers. What can I expect from someone who admits he dosn't read the directions and throws in random cichlids purchased from Wal-Mart?

and No, I'm not a perfect fish keeper.. But like I said before, if you are using an algacide with rays, it only shows lack of research. I understand you learn from your mistakes, but It just baffles me when people purchase such high dollar fish with out investigating the proper needs. Algae means Nitrates, Nitrates mean not enough water changes. If you don't know you need to do large frequent water changes with rays, it would only tell me that you didnt research and/or your LFS is lame and stealing your money.

Just my 2 cents..

It wasn't really ment as a post to get answers.I allready know what I did.The only reason I posted this was to let people know that this stuff kills fish.

You may have some good advice, but the way you go about giving it is completely uncalled for.I screwed up and put this stuff in my tank. That was a mistake. That still doesn't mean that Algae Destroyer doesn't kill fish.If you don't believe me put it in your "perfect" tank and see what happens.
