How much for a breeding pair of convict cichlids? Are they easy to sex if purchased at a LFS?

They are very cheap like mentioned.
The difference between sexes is that a female will have have a slight orange coloration on her belly. Some females have more orange/red than others.
Nice thread btw!

Thanks for the kind words

I am glad this has helped out a few people.

The fry can be kept with the parents. Like mentioned I place a sponge over the intake when i leave them in. But the parents will not lay another batch until the old fry are removed. I remove them only because they grow faster when you seperate them and power feed, and the parents start the cycle all over again once they are removed.

this isnt breeding but interesting what a guy i know did was took a big rubber maid tub put many feeder guppies in it with a uv filter and a canister (dont remeber what kind) he left it running for a couple months be for he bought his rtc. to me it seems smart because, at least in my head, what would have died died after 3 months

Would I be able to raise convicts in simple plastic containers. Just bare containers, no sand, plants or would they need hiding places to lay eggs?

planning to breed mollies, or swordtail. which would reproduce faster ? swordtail or mollies? also will my feeder breeding tank need to have filter? or c an i just add some gravel and some plants for hiding places?

SUCCESS! I got wigglers from my convicts today ! And the parents are only an 1" at best...

WOW! Mine were at least 3" before they had fry.

Congrats! What are you feeding?

NLS cichlid formula 1mm :) And brine shrimp and bloodworms. I do NLS in the morning and brine shrimp or blood worms at night. im stoked I am glad I saw the eggs and added that foam to the filter intake or else I might have never known lol.

Yes anything that holds water and is of adequate size could be made into a breeding tank.

I do mine in 10g bare bottom tanks with nothing but a clay pot for them to lay eggs in. And a filter of course.

There pretty close to the same in speed of reproduction. But IMO mollies grow faster and are usually born a little bigger as well.

A filter of some sort is neccasary as a biological filter. With out it you would get an ammonia build up and that would definetly cause at the very least stress to the fish. And they would not spawn as easily. And ammonia build up in higher ppm's will kill off all aquatic life.

There are several ways you can make little DIY filters out of stuff you have laying around the house that will work just fine. All you need is a air pump to drive it.

Breeding live bearers is simple but keeping the parents from eating the fry is defficult. You can add a bunch of floating plants or even large clump's of string or yarn for the fry to hide in. The parents and fry will also benefit from the addittion of some salt. 1 table spoon for every 3-5 gallons works wonders for live bearers.
