Not sure we find any batmans in the wild??? I wonder what causes it? If it is a recessive gene? Where did the gene get messed up at? Maybe a possible result in captive breeding somewhere that produced a genetic mutation that is coming out in some rays??

I think that pups with this defect would not fare well or survive long in the wild.

Genetics is certianly not the only possibility for the cause of this.

Congratulate ... Lucky its Batman not Spiderman. Hi !! Its it just trial and error ?

I also have to agree a batman pup would not survive. A couple months ago there was an idea about rays "sun bathing" for warmth. Well with this type of disk there is less space for the sun to hit causing a colder body if that idea is right. Also with this shape disk they could not trap fish under them. Finaly, imo this disk has to limit some of the speed at which they can swim leaving them more open to predators.

Batmans also contain less electroreceptors and are more likely to get injured in the wild...

SORRY NOT TO SOUND NEGATIVE BUT THAT TRAIT SHOULD NEVER TRY TO BE DUPLICATED. VERY UGLY

everyone has their own opinion...

congrats on the pups!

i am a firm believe that this defect is caused by inter breeding by breeding 2 closely related adults

lets face it when most people buy rays they buy them in pairs and in most cases from the same breeder

breeders with lots of pairs of rays don't seam to have this problem as their gene pool is more clean

i still think SOME not all batman rays you see for sale are cut to look that way as the price tag of this type of ray is high lets face it in Asia they cut and dye fish all the time so what would they do for a high priced fish like a batman ray

don't get me wrong this does happen but not always as neat and tidy as the rays pictured in some cases its just a split front lip

a ray like this probably never happens in the wild due to the massive gene pool

if it did happen in the wild the ray would have big problems surviving as rays use suction to pin down their pray a batman ray would have problems doing this
