You get canned for vandalism, sex with a minor, armed robbery, rape and I don't know what else.

Wish they did that here tbh...

but on topic.. sad to see fish simply banned for lack of knowledge out there. Gar are pretty hevaily persecuted here in the US because game fisherman are in the belief they eat all the baby bass ect. Been fishing in WI for 10 yrs. and prior to that quite abit in IL. I only know of one frined who even managed to hook a gar let alone see them on anyone elses line while fishing.

Has it been suggested that the fish kept currently simply be micro chipped so they can be "regulated"? Hopefully you guys get to keep your current gar i the worst case, but hopefully the ban doesn't stick.

sad seeing so many species being further and further regulated or simply rejected from being allowed in the trade.

there is a 1.5m (4'9'') gator gar caught by fishermen in Sing earlier this years, maybe because of that!

wow really? any link? haha awesome.

anyway i heard some news too from my friend, he has a shop LFS in sg. told him about this, and he told me. they plan to ban fishes that can grow huge with awesome teeth as in those, like Goliath tiger, gars, and etc..

reason being, some hobbiest let go their monsters into reservoirs and it might be dangerous. LOL

its just a really sad news... and shocking one.

As if our ecosystem wasn't screwed already.
Here's how it works here, instead of teaching people about the harms of dumping fish into the already messed up(in terms of alien species) water, the AVA will ban whatever they see fit, because they're just lazy, ignorant fat @sses, who don't take the time to research themselves.

It's sad to see, really. They've already banned almost every reptile, invertebrate, amphibian. And now they're going for fish, what's next, birds, cats, and dogs?
How often does one hear "fish attacks person in reservoir"?

And unfortunately, protesting isn't allowed either, without a permit(Like they'd give one to you. It's like asking for permission to shun the government.). Also, unlike say, invertebrates and smaller reptiles, it's not very easy to illegally import(By the way, though many animals are banned here, they are so easy to smuggle in. Just goes to show how lazy the AVA really are in enforcing whatever bans they put in place.) fish.

I really hope this crap doesn't go through, and I'm glad that I have the opportunity to leave this country(eventually) for good.

I doubt anybody work in AVA actually keeps monster fish. If there are, obviously this ban won't have happen. They are just some screwed up dude who know nothing about fishes and work only for money. Just take the easiest route whenever a problem arise. Ban and when citizens complain, its all right as long as they get their monthly pay.

Seriously AVA need to wake up their idea and start communicating with the public. First of all, we pay taxs. The tax goes into their pay cheque.
So am I saying I'm paying them so that I cant keep the fish I enjoy?

Any singaporean plan on confronting AVA should go to AQUARAMA, they are also participating there.

Imagine they decided to ban bacteria addictive in bottles such as Stress Zyme and Stability because they are scare that those "ignorant" people dump those into our reservoir and outcompete "Singapore's" nitrifying bacteria.

The only ignorant people here are them... Seriously who would release a gar or a GATF into a reservoir?
Those fishes still carries a price and can be sold in the hobby market.

Because when their bans are approved by the government, it becomes law.
And you know how the government here is.;)

People do dump Alligator and Florida gars into the water bodies here though... But really, how bad can they be compared to all the Cichla that live in our reservoirs?

Wish I could be there, but I'll only be back in Singapore after that.

Agree, many people threw their louhan fish in reservoir once the popularity of keeping them is over.
But the government didn't do s**t about it. Why take action now?

Don't blame the government so much. It's the select few who have kept such monsters and decided to dump them into local waters. There has to be a reason for the ban and i've been thinking it's down to someone getting attacked by one of these monster fishes, or their kids attacked, or their dogs attacked, or something. That has to be some sort of provocation by the fishes that led to this ban. The government may be unreasonable at times but they don't do things without a reason, no matter how small it is. It could even be that someone spotted a Gar/Cichla eating a bird that landed on the water and decided to report it, thus leading to this sudden ban.

Yes the government would rather wipe its hands clean without first trying to educate the hobbyists of this country but it's the hobbyists who nonchalantly dumped their fishes led has brought this upon us. So boo them, not the government.

BUT, if the government does ban Bichirs then they better start training their men for riot control.

But why now? And these reasons aren't very logical. These fish have been in our waters for a very long time now. Heck, snakeheads, which are much more aggressive towards anything when in breeding mode(I have personally been attacked by parents of a brood) are a native fish species here and are being bred for the market.
I'm sure if there really was an attack we'd have heard about it by now.
Even in their native countries, I don't think I've ever heard of a confirmed case of these fish attacking and mortally wounding a human.

Also, if it was about abandoned fish destroying the ecosystem, they would have banned all sorts of Cichlids first.
