channarox;5156236; said:But why now? And these reasons aren't very logical. These fish have been in our waters for a very long time now. Heck, snakeheads, which are much more aggressive towards anything when in breeding mode(I have personally been attacked by parents of a brood) are a native fish species here and are being bred for the market.
I'm sure if there really was an attack we'd have heard about it by now.
Even in their native countries, I don't think I've ever heard of a confirmed case of these fish attacking and mortally wounding a human.
Also, if it was about abandoned fish destroying the ecosystem, they would have banned all sorts of Cichlids first.
Cheesetian;5156270; said:You don't need to wait for the fishes to attack someone before you decide to ban it. The very fact that they are in our waters is proof that they have been released by inconsiderate hobbyists and that they pose a threat to someone who might(for whatever reason) be in the same body of water as these fishes. I highly doubt it is about the ecosystem at the moment, it's about the threat these fishes pose, no matter how minute it may be. Comparing Cichlids and Gars, it's pretty obvious which is more deadly. The AVA doesn't want any complains because it is just like our government to ban everything to avoid future problems. It's their "End of Story" way to doing things. Banned, EOS you peasants.
channarox;5156282; said:That's true. But look at the number of dog attacks on humans, much much higher than many other pet-type animals.
Dogs aren't banned(though there are restrictions on some of the bigger breeds).
It's too bad though, that they don't take the time and effort to place some sort of restriction, while still allowing these fish to be kept. Singapore has a very large aquarium hobby market, and it is still growing. I don't think the government realizes this.
Cheesetian;5156290; said:Precisely why they are only banning toothy fishes, like how they've banned dogs with extremely aggressive temperaments and the capability to rip your throat out. Imagine the outcry from S'poreans and even organizations all over the world if the AVA decides to "Oh, let's ban fishes cos' they've got scales". Don't get me wrong though Michel, although i've got not much of an interest in the fishes that will now be outlaws in a country with "too much" law, i'm just saying the government has a reason behind every law they pass out, no matter how small and stupid it may be. I'm angry that their doing this but from a "parental point" of view, one would rather not have a snake at home than keeping it and risking the chance of a child getting bitten. What i'm really bummed out about is the fact that many LFS owners will be affected. The industry isn't very easy and the banning of these fishes will only make things worse.
