All you rtc experts, HELP.....

Hard problem to analyze.

Good advising above. Filtration may be a bit light, indeed; little of any safety margin too but it heavily depends on the media - porous ceramic rings or lava rock - the surface area is 1000 times different.

300 gal Rubbermade tub is only about $250 and is an excellent choice here. Vinyl and thin PVC liners are easily punctured. The standard 45 mil pond rubber liner or 20 mil PVC walk-in shower liner are far better.

IMO, fish don't get bored. They are driven by instincts.

Yes. Water parameters and what kit is used? Water clarity is irrelevant here.

The temp is a bit too high. I'd not go above 82 F. 76-78 F is fine IMO.

I dont think light has much to do with it.

Check for external parasites too. Slime too thick (cloudy looking) or coming off?

Agree with everything stated thus far. I will give a second to that being way too light filtration for this size fish. I've actually been in this exact same situation. Every time I would feed my rtc my ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites would all spike and fish would go insane and sometimes puke. It was my first fish, and the lfs told me a 125 gal would be good for life. My rtc outgrew it within a year and I tried to make it work. Kept him in there even when he was 24" didn't upgrade as the pet store told me it's ok the fish can bend. He was thrashing water out of the tank every night and breaking the glass heaters, ect. So very similar. I was doing 2x daily 50% water changes to keep my params under control. In the end it was too much, and I couldn't get anyone to take the fish off my hands. Tried every fish store within 100 miles. I went into the air force and had to put him down because no one wanted him. It was a horrible expirience. Wish I had just went ahead and made the pond for him that I was planning, but was trying to rehome him first.

So the moral is do something now rather than wait. It's going to be too hard to rehome him at this point and he needs a bigger tank sooner rather than later. He's already at the size where he would need the capacity of a medium sized sump filter at this point. There is just not enough biocapability in your current filtration. Even if you just had a 10 or 20 gal sump filter you'd be good for another 3 months max. Right now your set up is not safe for your fish. If at all possible go for a rubbermaid container as mentioned above, or go to your local farm, or tractor supply store. I got a 6' dia, 2ft deep cattle trough at one for very cheap! Way cheaper than even the rubber maids. Could last you years in a container like that. They also sold these blue troughs that were like elongated ovals that were 3' wide x 8' long, and 2' deep. Like 300 gals also I believe. Those are sweet and easy to get into a house!!! Might be getting another one myself when I move again!!!

Also you can do really cheap drop in bucket filters if you go the trough route. That's what I did and although no pretty at all it works and will buy you a few years.

Haven't noticed the pleco sucking slime coat, I'll be getting rid of him soon as he is always hidden nd I'd rather myself clean the glass because it's that much less waste. I'll get a new heater and adjust the temp. Water has been checked as "good" according to a local fish store who is highly reputable and has been around for 20 plus years, the only one I go to and where I've bought all my rtcs from. I was hoping you'd get in on this TBTB.

If you can get one and have the room intex pools work welluploadfromtaptalk1352096687077.jpg
1400gal and plenty of room to move around

If you have problems with the rtc you have right now why get 2 more?? you have 3 rtc now. That is kind of ridiculous. considering your biggest tank cant fit one rtc.

I did. Another thing I might add is that it is "easy" to section off a corner of the tank by siliconing a strip of glass right next to the corner, enough to fit a heater and a bubbler in there, leaving a bit of an opening at the bottom and the top. Common trick. But one must empty the tank and rehome the fish and keep the bacteria alive and fed.

As we touched upon before:

1. A nice API Master Kit is $20-$24, say from Petsolutions.com, allows 150-300 tests of each kind.
2. It is a very serious committment to own an RTC, a rough equivalent of deciding to keep a horse.

Please, purchase the kit and start using it. You will be enormously glad you did. When I started out in the hobby, I was like that too - taking my water to my LFS. When I finally bought my own, it was incomparably better.

I wouldn't get 2 more. I already have them. Read carefully. If you're going to be a dick then don't even bother posting because people like you are the people who probably don't even have them, or you do but you think your **** don't stink. I have other threads where I have all sorts of plans for plywood tanks or steel framed tanks with liners inside.

Noted- will do!
