Yeah I'm aware of Kirk's 9 foot 6 fish and it is an extreme outlier for the species.. it is still not 10 foot so I'm not sure the point.
you were aware of it then why did you say none get above 8.5 feet? and make the mythical 2.5(really should be 1.5) feet comment?

I believe I made my point that there are sometimes abnormalities and it is probably possible for one to get to 10 feet . hey 9 feet 6 inches you may as well round up to a solid 10. ;)

not to be the guy who's that freakin' guy but you rarely see gators more than 3-4 feet.. I think it's unfair to tell anyone to prepare for the maximum wild size.. datnoids max out at (supposedly) 24".. how many of those do you see? how many 6' rtc's do you see? how many 7' nile perch do you see? etc.. I'd say that this guy will lose his first gator gar in less than a year, the experience will make him wiser and he'll know what to do next time.. we learn by doing.. and if, just if the gar would grotesquely enough outgrow his pond (which would take a good 10 years), just release the damn thing without saying anything or if your'e a coldhearted basterd just fry the thing. and for the depth, if your gar is doing a headstand there is a pretty darn good chance it won't survive it.

well.. I'm in no way claiming to be any sort of expert, in fact my gars just stubbornly insists on dying on me so my 0.2 should count for.. well, 0.2 but generally speaking captive fish do, more often than not die of unatural causes. how many of you have had a fish die of old age? guessing gars have an estimated life span of 50 years plus I think this guy could probably solve the problem before the gar needs a walking stick and glasses..

have to agree with Bran on this

Mathematics does not work in mysterious ways 2+2= 4... 9.6 does not however equal 10 it is 9.6. And I said "8.5 is well documented" not "none reach above". I very well do hold there is no documented 10 foot gator gar that has been accounted for and documented. There has not been one.. There has not been one to date. This remains an actual fact and not just a wishful impression that I care to make up just because. Unlike the 10 foot crowd whom desire to round up or act on faith of some sort.

Show me one and I'll change that but until then it is a chupacabra or Nessie... Rationality based on solid known information is a good thing to have some times. Solid and known... 10 foot Atractosteus spatula do not exist in any proven manner. I could care less your ideas about "abnormalities" the simple fact remains that it is not Verified and it has not be proven.

Here is where Science and just mythology have issues. I'm not interested in speculation or opinion, I want to see proven documented data to support something. If that documented data does not exist then it is not proven and is really not relevant.

I demand that pic of Perun in the knee deep water fending off a large Gator Gar with a baseball bat. :nilly:

I'm apparently not allowed to add photos so sorry I can't post that or anyother pic. I'm banned from attachments... Why I'm not sure but whatever.
