not to be the guy who's that freakin' guy but you rarely see gators more than 3-4 feet.. I think it's unfair to tell anyone to prepare for the maximum wild size.. datnoids max out at (supposedly) 24".. how many of those do you see? how many 6' rtc's do you see? how many 7' nile perch do you see? etc.. I'd say that this guy will lose his first gator gar in less than a year, the experience will make him wiser and he'll know what to do next time.. we learn by doing.. and if, just if the gar would grotesquely enough outgrow his pond (which would take a good 10 years), just release the damn thing without saying anything or if your'e a coldhearted basterd just fry the thing. and for the depth, if your gar is doing a headstand there is a pretty darn good chance it won't survive it.

well.. I'm in no way claiming to be any sort of expert, in fact my gars just stubbornly insists on dying on me so my 0.2 should count for.. well, 0.2 but generally speaking captive fish do, more often than not die of unatural causes. how many of you have had a fish die of old age? guessing gars have an estimated life span of 50 years plus I think this guy could probably solve the problem before the gar needs a walking stick and glasses..

wow..awesome speech. I agree 100% with you on that one. People here get way too obsessed by the max wild size of gator gar and disconnected from reality. I've kept 3 gator gars in a 450g pond for 1.5 yrs now and when I look at the pond, it still looks like an empty pond to me.

Please don't grow a gator gar out and then release it when it's too big.

Nice rant, nice speech, all good points, etc, etc, etc.

I agree though, There's no point in claiming a fish can reach 10ft when there's no proof it ever has. 9ft6inch is close i'll agree, but it's not 10ft! It as a species may have done in the past, but until there is 100% proof evidence of this fact then for all we know they're just fishermens stories. It's like Arapaima reach 4.5 meters according to most sources, however that is based on an unproven old story and most these days don't seem to pass much beyond 2.5-3 meters if they're lucky.

To the OP: I'm slightly confused with the size of your pond (pics would help with this, but MFK isn't helping with that right now), at the start of this thread and on other threads relevent too it you've always said it's 500gal. With the dimensions you've given here it's actually 1800gal! Now that's a huge difference and should have been fairly easy to spot (and diverging slightly for a second to another of your threads you'll need a hell of a lot more than 1200W to heat an outdoor 1800gal pond.) If you could at the first oppotunity MFK allows adding attachments show us some pictures of your pond with a tape measure showing us dimensions and it's location, it will help us a lot more be able to advise you on your heating/filtering/stocking questions and clear up some of the gray areas with your setup.
