I was at my lfs and had already bought the fish i wanted and was about to leave because they were closing. thats when the guy told me he had a real alligator gar he was selling! it was about 5-6 inches and his price was about 40 bucks. should i go back and get it, or is that even a good deal?

Can you properly house and care for a fish that get several feet in length?

please run a search on alligator gars, the information you come up with should be more than enough to help you make this decision. there are dozens of gator gar threads that come up in this forum, the answer is generally the same. again, try to review as much of the present information as you can beforehand--

great example of why people use scientific names on here....just because someone tells you its an alligator gar doesnt mean it really is...I was sold a 16" Florida gar as an "alligator gar" and a 16" Florida gar as a "longnose alligator gar"

Not saying it isnt a gator you are looking at, but it could be any of the species so your best bet is to get a pic so we can properly ID it and then go from there with care...in which case searching previous threads is a great way to learn.

Depending on what state you live in, many states like Florida have moved to make Alligator gars protected species. There numbers are declining in the wild.

if(you have a 1000g+ pond or you are ready to build a 1000g+ pond)
then buy the gator
else
don't get the fish you can't keep properly

btw 1000gal is sort of an exaggeration. although these fish eventually need something of the sort to be comfortable, they do grow from small and there are stages in which not such a large tank/pond would be required for a year or two more.

search feature works wonders.... a very large foot print tank or pond is required for one...
