he said what most members here would say
its not just that
for a fish that grows 5' or so
needs optimum place to swim around
if a fish you have bought cannot even turn around easily in the provided tank then absolutely the tank is small
and when gars are kept in really small tanks they tend to be more skittish and may injure their backs

btw 1000gal is sort of an exaggeration. although these fish eventually need something of the sort to be comfortable, they do grow from small and there are stages in which not such a large tank/pond would be required for a year or two more.
aren't you kinda contradicting yourself in that statement

actually if you go by the steps then you will have spent more money
as these fish grow to nearly 3' or so in the first year

@yohan you should check polypterus's thread about his gator gar hal the 3rd
his gator is growing at 5mm a day being a juvie

well im saying that you dont need a 1000gal immediatlly or soon just cause you have a gator gar, but will need one eventually. furthermore 1000gal is merely an expression that you used. you could very well house a gator in a say, 500gal if the footprint is right, as they dont need much height. where are you getting this 1000gal figure from? it's more of a statement to show that he needs a gigantic pond rather than to be quoted on as the bible truth as to what the requirements for gator gars are. catch my drift?

didn't see this part. no actually they get to around 20-24" by the first year. only in year two they get to 3'ish, and very slowly from there

where in the hell are you getting this info from? first off tanksizes are always debatable and if someone told me i needed a thousand gallon tank, i would think they meant a thousand gallon tank! the bottom line is...someone who has no experience keeping these fish has no room giving advice ( i know you had one for a short while), but i would hardly say you are qualified to be giving info on this fish. i'm not trying to knock anyone, but there has been a ton of mis-info and crappy advice going around the gar forum lately. people hear someone give advice and suddenly everyone knows what theyre talking about and everyone is giving the same advice without knowing what it really means. all i'm saying is...if there is not significant personal experience, then maybe we should let those with the experience answer the question.

and of course we all do know that gator gar do get huge, beyond that we should let the experienced answer the question.

just get one of those metal above ground pools when the time comes but in the mean time make sure it has turning room in the tank it is housed in at the time. make sure its fed good, if you use feeders quarentine them for atleast 2 weeks.(im sure you already know this) and if you add tankmates dont add anything that you dont mind loosing.

i wasn't giving any info? i was merely stating what you are. look at my reply carefully..i wasn't giving any advise.

my gator grew to 20" in 10months, and from what richard says that seems to be the general case.

they grow fast when they are still young and slow down after 9 months or a year i can say this in observation of my cousins past gator gar and i think the 3 feet in a year is a little bit of exaggeration.

i think xander is right about the step by step thing, who in the bloody hell would put a 6" gar in a 1000g? huh! youll need a grow out tank. you arent ready for the expenses then dont get the fish. it may worth only 40 bucks but keeping it is a pain staking and expensive process.

its really hard get help here without being flamed. a simple debate would always get out of control till it becomes a flame thread and be closed by the moderators.
